I often read threads on here where the OP is being manipulated and lied to by some bloke, or has unrealistic hopes and expectations, and posters tell her to have some dignity or to have some self- respect.
I think those posters are getting it wrong, and not purely from a linguistic point of view.
It's very very important not to lose yourself in a relationship, and to maintain (or build) your sense of self-worth, but that's not the same as being stoic or silent or graceful. "For god's sake, have some self-respect" isn't going to help anyone feel more worthy of self-respect.
As for dignity, if you're worrying about that while you're having sex, you're doing it wrong.
Self-preservation is the appropriate expression here.
Anyone agree?
