Please take it easy on me if I'm in the wrong.

I'm not sure if the phrase "we did" or "I did" is correct or not but it always annoys me. How exactly do you 'do' California? Please let me know how you 'did' Germany last year?

Surely you travelled to California, holidayed in Greece, toured the Caribbean or visited Germany?

It annoys me too , one of my neighbours also says let's do the chicken shop ( take away ) it sounds like they are planning on robbing it!

Plasticwaste · 26/06/2025 03:09

It's stupid. Makes it sound like you've explored every inch of the country when you most likely stayed on a sunlounger at an all-inclusive resort 🙄

TwoHares · 26/06/2025 03:14

I’m sure we must have been reading the same thread! It sounds ridiculous to me.

Topseyt123 · 26/06/2025 03:45

It's bollocks. They just went on a holiday there.

stayathomer · 26/06/2025 04:08

But they did ‘do’ it- they wanted to go and now have ticked it off their list as they had certain trips etc they wanted to achieve before knowing they’d not return! I say we did America last year, we went to the places we really wanted to see and as a family agreed we hadn’t much of an urge to return again. So it’s done for us. Tick!

Thank goodness it's not just me. It's something my parents say and every time it makes my insides tense up!

It makes it sounds like they've ticked it off a checklist rather than enjoyed a holiday there. So they can tell people all the countries they've "done."

BadAmbassador · 04/07/2025 11:52

See also ‘out there’, eg you can’t get xyz out there, he lives out there now, her family’s from out there. Why do I hate that so much? 🤣

'Did' is sloppy at best; it is lazy to use the verb 'to be' and not other, perfectly descriptive, verbs.

But that sounds so performative, like you’re not really interested in the place at all, just something to be ticked off.

Tourism caters massively for this - it’s just not where the cool people go. You may have well stayed at home and scrolled through it.

What verb would you use to convey that you travelled extensively within a country and enjoyed it?
I 'did' a particular place one year, because it was a road trip that covered a great area and we made about 12 stops. I greatly enjoyed it, there's nothing performative about it because it was 'done' on the cheap, so majority of people would not consider it a holiday. And yes, I have now ticked it off and do not plan on returning, simply because I want to see somewhere new.
