This is wrong, right? But why?

It's a system-generated email from Photobox:

"Hi,

Have a look at my album I have shared with you on PhotoBox."

Leaving aside the thorny issue of whether one can have "shared" something with someone unilaterally, and whether you can share something "on" something intangible rather than, say, a lawn or a table, shouldn't it read:

"Have a look at the album I have shared with you on Photobox."

ooh i think i know this one!!!!

'which i have shared with you' is a relative clause. purpose of a relative clause is to specify a particular referent, i.e. here, to pick out one of a number of possible albums as the one that's being talked about.

now, 'my' also seems to fulfil this function - which album? MY album.

so this sentence feels tautological.

note that it works ok as 2 separate sentences:

have a look at my album. i've shared it with you on photobox.

Pan · 21/05/2008 18:20

I don't understand.

What, exactly, has this to do with Manchester United v Chelski tonight? [confused emocion]

onebatmother · 21/05/2008 19:35

unless.. unless.. the photos are from moscow and my friend is named Colleen.

Damn you asicsgirl. I was going to say what you said and be impressive, but you already have.

onebatmother · 21/05/2008 21:11

threadwworm, my dear, how are you?

I am still disturbed by your extraneous w.

Can I interest you in the robustly Germanic Threadwerm? Frau Koch (now Chief of Staff at the Spa Angst) would like it.

Or does that actually just sound like txtspk?

OP posts:
Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 21:15

The pronunciation that I imagine for that makes me think of the Wermacht(sp?). A mighty parasitic army. A definite no I'm afraid.

How are you?

onebatmother · 21/05/2008 21:17

Ich bin zo-zo, my dearrrr.

kate at
minimum dot co dot ukay, should you care to.

OP posts:
onebatmother · 21/05/2008 21:19

okay, I made that German bit up. does Ich bin mean I am? I'm basing it purely on the Kennedy gaffe "ich bin ein berliner"...

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:22

Oh here you all are in Pedants' Corner, chewing the fat (I hate that expression )?

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:23

Onebat - Surely, you made up that German bit.

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 21:27

Ivh bin sounds right to me. But I don't really do German.

The only german phrases I know are little snatches of philosophy. Whe a German friend of ours was showing us round Berlin, I kept excitedly saying 'What does that sign say?', because to me it all looked like it said 'The world is the totality of facts not things' -- and she would patiently say 'It says "Broom cupboard; please leave tidy,"' or whatever.

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 21:30

Swedes! You have gone all plebian. Did they take your peerage away?

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:37
Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:39

Onebat persuaded me to return to my roots (sic). I'm not sure I like it.

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:40

Threadwworm - I have missed you.

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:40

Threadwworm - I have missed you.

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 21:46

Thanks for mentioning your email address onebat. Might take you up on that depite my very real fear of unpixelated people.

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:48

Oh just ignore me because I'm pixel-ated.

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 21:51

And how are you, dear Swede. Did you know that 'pixilated' means whimsical and bemused? So MNers are largely both pixelated and pixilated.

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:53

Yes good, thank you Enterobius Verm. Does Old Elvet mean anything to you?

Threadwworm · 21/05/2008 21:55

Yep. V. close to me, and the location of a few university buildings I think?

Is your DS headed that way?

Swedes · 21/05/2008 21:57

Noooo. DS is only 16 - sitting GCSEs this year. I was there for a few years.

VVVQVsSockPuppet · 21/05/2008 21:58

there is a missing "which" in there, I think
