Richard Osman 'bought'

Sometimes reader, first time pedant.

I listen to The Rest is Entertainment and notice that Richard Osman always says 'bought' instead of brought... Or am I hearing things? Is it a speech difference or accent I'm not picking up? (I'm not from the UK).

I feel that at this stage of his career he must know, so is he trolling us? Considering he is an author and quizzer, he does come off as having a chip on his shoulder about grammar etc.

I listen to the podcast regularly and have never noticed this happening.

MounjaroMounjaro · 25/04/2025 19:41

I haven't noticed it, either. I think he's great though and I'd bet my house he knows the difference.

BikkieTime · 25/04/2025 19:42

Maybe it is just my ear that is off! I think I hear it whenever he does this "this episode is brought to you by..." at the start of the podcast.

I've just played it and I think it's just his accent.

Pianoaholic · 25/04/2025 19:44

Nikki Chapman does this on Escape to the Country and it drives me mad!
She definitely says bought and not brought as it appears on the subtitles.
Don't know about Richard osman.

BikkieTime · 25/04/2025 19:47

@MounjaroMounjaro I wondered if it was that. I just opened up the podcast and it 100% sounds like "bought to you by Sky" to me - but no one else on the internet seems to have said anything so must consider if it is a 'me' problem! (Secretly hoping someone will come on to agree with me).

It could be that he pronounces the R so softly that you can't hear it. I used to say it like that when I was younger but started making the R more pronounced because I realised people may think I don't know the difference.

I think she has a very subtle speech impediment so her Rs can sounds like Ws or with ‘brought’ may not be sounded at all. So it’s probably not that she is saying an incorrect word, but it sounds wrong.

I haven’t noticed Richard Osman doing it and would be surprised if he did. He seems like a stickler for such things.

It’s the TOWIE lot that don’t seem to know that bought and brought are two separate words. And don’t get me started on people using lend and borrow interchangeably.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 25/04/2025 21:00

At least he’s stopped saying “by and large” about fifty times an episode.

mewkins · 25/04/2025 21:02

I love the rest is entertainment and haven't really noticed this but do notice the difference between Marina Hyde's quite plummy accent vs his Essex one. I think he just pronounces his Rs softly generally on the podcast- maybe not so much on TV.

Completely not the same and a massive derail but a transwoman on R4 today kept telling us we needed Cer-VI-ickle screening, despite the female Dr saying cervical multiple times. I nearly cried.

redcord · 25/04/2025 21:09

I listened. Deffo 'bought' (as in 'bought to you by Sky'). In the episode I heard anyway.

(Unless he's trying to say: 'Bought to you. Buy Sky.' like some kind of tautological ad).

crockofshite · 25/04/2025 21:11

He does babble on the rest is entertainment podcast, so does marina, or perhaps the speed dial is wound up to the babble setting.

Doesn't Nicky chapman have a speech impediment with her r's? As w's? Or am I making that up?!

BlueEyedBogWitch · 25/04/2025 21:58

I don’t know why, but I find TRIE really depressing. It just seems a really horrible industry. I don’t feel any better for knowing half the stuff they talk about, and their rants about AI freak me out.

And although I do like Richard, he comes across on the podcast as a bloviating mansplainer with an avaricious streak.

He speaks very highly of me, I hear.

Everythingwillbeokay · 25/04/2025 22:02

He's from Sussex @mewkins - Haywards Heath. I know because he went to my sixth form

upinaballoon · 25/04/2025 22:27

I don't listen to this podcast but I regularly hear him on 'House of Games', calling a 'picture' a 'pitcher'.

I got really hooked on listening to it and then came back after a few weeks off and did think "why am I listening to this?"

I think the more I've heard Richard talk the more I hear a bit of chippy streak comes through. Whereas Marina actually seems more personable as compared to her writing.

Perhaps I'll take a break from listening!

Oh interesting! Wiki said Billericay. Maybe he moved around a bit as a kid.

ImagineHarder · 14/06/2025 09:16

I’ve concluded that you’re right, OP and he does say ‘bought to you by Sky’. And also, disappointingly, with @BlueEyedBogWitch that he frequently emerges on TRIE as a dogmatic mansplainer.

tammienorrie · 14/06/2025 09:52

I've given up on the podcast, it's very tedious. I would bet though that Richard Osman knows the difference between bought and brought. On the show intro/ads he will be reading a script, and I'd imagine the copywriters would know the difference too.

BestIsWest · 14/06/2025 10:03

Yes, yes, I hear him say ‘bought’ too and it gets on my nerves, I have to fast forward.

But I agree, it’s gone off the boil recently.
