It is not half term…

it is the Easter holidays/break/spring break/holiday whatever else you call it (in England, currently). What it is not at the moment is half term because we have finished the term and half term was back in February. Absolutely fine if being said by parents etc, I have no problem with this at all, however just yesterday I saw two different social media posts from local schools along the lines of “hope everyone is enjoying half term!” They should know better. Who’s with me?!

I'm not with you OP. I used to work in a education, not teaching, and the Easter break is also called the half term/Spring break, so the school isn't wrong.

The February break is the Winter break.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 15/04/2025 11:15

Easter holidays is definitely not a half term! There's two threads on this now though...

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/04/2025 11:15

Retired teacher and 100% agree with the OP. Using 'Half Term' to describe every school holiday makes no sense - half of what?

StrongandNorthern · 15/04/2025 11:19

I'm with you!
Term 1 - Sept - Christmas ... half term in the middle ('halfway through the term' ) then the Christmas holidays.
Term 2 - Jan - April - with a half term in the middle ... then the Easter holidays.
Term 3 - April - July - with a half term in the middle ... then the Summer holidays.
Not rocket science is it? 😂

Yes, I did mention Spring break in my OP, this is fine and accurate. Calling it half term, however, is just factually incorrect as it is not halfway through the term…the term has finished.

Apilogies, I haven’t seen another thread.

Exactly!

I don’t understand what’s so difficult about it, either 🤷‍♀️

I only noticed this recently - it wasn't a thing when my kids were at school (last one has been out over ten years now). Half term was the week holiday HALF WAY THROUGH THE TERM.

I think too many people are just parroting what other people are saying without even a moment's critical thought.

DuckonaBike · 15/04/2025 11:35

You are correct OP, but there’s another thread where someone is defending referring to the Easter holiday as half term. It makes no sense and I don’t know what the world is coming to.

LadyDanburysHat · 15/04/2025 11:39

This annoys me too, when did it become such a thing. We have always had summer, Christmas and Easter holiday, the ones between being half terms.

TheBirdintheCave · 15/04/2025 17:40

This annoys me too. It makes no sense to call every break half term.

There's a post on aibu on this very thing, I think, altho it may be in chat.
I agrree with you, @PatMustardsBigTool , it's really damn annoying!
A term is 'x' weeks. For arguments sake, 11 weeks. Half term break/holiday is midway though, a few days off.
End of term holiday is at the end of 11 weeks, i.e. end of term holiday.
However, we do NOT have spring fucking break. We are not american. It's bad enough that the 'prom' has inveigeled it's way into uk speech. A prom is the front in Eastbourne/Blackpool, etc!

40 years ago, the answer to that was Ravel's Bolero! (Torville and Dean!)

HonoriaBulstrode · 16/04/2025 15:17

I don't know if there's more than one other thread, but the one I posted on seems to have been deleted for breaking Talk guidelines. No idea what happened, I only posted once then forgot about it until I saw this thread.

Violashifts · 16/04/2025 15:19

Totally agree! I know it is irrational to be annoyed but it really bothers me.🤦‍♀️

gamerchick · 16/04/2025 15:20

Its just a quick way of saying the kids are off school.

Precisely.

B0D · 28/04/2025 13:17

6 half terms a year is very unhelpful.

DrCoconut · 09/05/2025 09:24

I've just seen a company advertising day trips in half term. If you investigate further they mean the summer holidays. It's confusing. To me at this time of year half term (or summer half term) refers to the week at the end of May.
