Pedants' corner

It’s rein it in

Aaaaargh!

I have come over to Pedant’s Corner to weep, quietly, and lament the degradation of our beautiful idiomatic language.

It’s “rein it in”. An equestrian idiom. I keep on seeing it written as “reign it in”. It has nothing to do with monarchy whatsoever. “Rein it in” paints a picture with words, it carries meaning. “Reign it in” makes absolutely no sense.

I’ve lost my rag. (While I’m here, It’s also “woman” singular, there’s no such thing as “a women”). Stop it, just stop it!!!

Edited because I dare not post a thread in Pedant’s Corner with a punctuation error.

Why does it always reign on me? Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?

Is it because I lay when I was seventeen?

I have also seen 'I led her down in the cot'

ItsCalledAConversation · 23/03/2025 09:30

You can mock but I am just giving free reign to my feelings

I’m also a bit frantic about “it wants washed” or “it needs mended” but I’ve posted about that before.

Three exclamation marks OP. Please remember where you are.

SpottedDonkey · 23/03/2025 11:24

I have seen things which are under control described by journalists as being ‘on a tight reign’. Again, this makes no sense whatsoever unless the matter in question is a frugal monarch. It’s infuriating.

sunbum · 23/03/2025 11:26

Better than rain I suppose.

Oldie but goodie seen on local FB selling site today. Chest of draws. Need gone. Gah!

CountFucula · 23/03/2025 11:30

Oh yes, I absolutely detest ‘wants washed’ ‘needs fed’. It’s the most awful, bosom hoiking, bastardisation of language.

ItsCalledAConversation · 23/03/2025 21:52

Might just start adding enigmatic one-word posts to threads in the vain hope of turning the ship…

I have just read "...... is the vein of my life".
Good God.

I’m also a bit frantic about “it wants washed” or “it needs mended” but I’ve posted about that before.

That's Scottish idiom, though.

TheCurious0range · 23/03/2025 22:52

I saw 'vein of my life' on a thread earlier.

Stripeyanddotty · 23/03/2025 22:53

@JeanGenieJean
I saw that too.
However, someone did correct it without having her head bitten off. Small steps.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 23/03/2025 22:53

"With regards to" and "in regards to" often spoil an otherwise flawless wall of text.

I feel enraged when I see these errors.

QueenOfHiraeth · 23/03/2025 22:54

Rein or reign, you'll just have to grin and bare it Grin

GreenCandleWax · 23/03/2025 22:55

Comprises of - it's everywhere, especially estate agents' blurb. Makes me want to scream.

LightDrizzle · 23/03/2025 22:56

What about “free rein”?! I see that all the time.

sanityisamyth · 23/03/2025 22:58

That’s correct …

LightDrizzle · 23/03/2025 23:01

sanityisamyth · 23/03/2025 22:58

That’s correct …

Sorry! It must have autocorrected! I meant “free reign”.

LightDrizzle · 23/03/2025 23:02

It autocorrected again but I caught it. I think people think it sounds right because they are thinking about sovereignty but of course it’s equestrian in origin just like the OP’s example.

UntamedShrew · 23/03/2025 23:04

Did you post this pacifically to annoy me!

bare with me, I am awful I know.

LightDrizzle · 23/03/2025 23:11

@UntamedShrew Yes! A lot of invitations to nudity! I quite like that one. You don’t see “grin and bare it” much though which seems a shame.

I read that; I wondered if it were a new saying!
