Since when has waiting list been replaced with waitlist? ( not even two words, which still doesn't make sense.)

It's all over the Internet.

I've worked for decades in the travel industry; it's been used in connection with hotel and airline reservations forever. Much of travel terminology originated in US.

I loathe it.
It's right there with 'upcoming' (coming, approaching...?). It was used three times in a short email from my former uni yesterday. They should know better, what with being, as they endlessly remind their alumnae, a beacon of academic excellence.

I deleted it.

The abbreviations are seeping into language. I keep hearing "slippy" instead of slippery. I wonder if predictive text is to blame for some of them.

My gym app states ‘you’re on the waitlist’. It always irks me.

I find it used more often as a verb - 'you have been waitlisted'

Agree with pp it is used a lot in the travel industry and always has been (or at least when I worked in travel a couple of decades ago)
