Liable or Prone?

I've never looked in this corner before, it's fascinating!
I have noticed a number of road signs warning that the road is 'Liable to flooding' and it sounds wrong, in my mind it should be either 'Prone to flooding' or 'Liable to flood'.
Any thoughts?

I agree, but as the people writing those signs insist upon Advanced Warning, instead of the correct Advance Warning, it’s a bit much to expect them to understand your excellent point!

@JudgeJ Thanks for making me think. The sign that annoys me is the one on the M74 that says "Danger Ice on Road". It is a permanant sign and I saw no ice in August.

Liable is wrong anyway, as it means 'likely to', whereas prone means 'has a tendency to'.

There is a sign at the entrance to a car park in a nearby town which enrages me every time I see it:

'Follow Directional Signage'

"Liable to flooding" or prone to flooding" both sound OK to me but I wouldn't say a road is liable to flood, because the road is the patient, not the agent of the action of flooding, i.e. a road does not flood, but rather a road is flooded. On the other hand, a river may certainly be liable to flood. You could also say that the road is liable to be flooded.

What's wrong with saying a road is likely to be flooded?
And how is that different from saying it has a tendency to be flooded?
