"Recommend me" a jacket

Why are so many women saying this? How can they not see it's so wrong? When did it start? I've only seen this on Mumsnet and never heard it in real life.

I assume it's short for the dative case - 'recommend to me'.

There are times when we do miss out the 'to', probably often. e.g. Mother passed (to) me an ice cream.

Is this the way in which you are hearing/seeing it being used?

The way I used "recommend" is..."can you recommed".....or "can you give me any recommendations". As far as I'm concerned (I may be wrong) "recommend to me" is wrong.
