Pedants' corner

I have just booked a hotel room that boasts a seating area with a 'chez lounge'.

I'm hopeful that there will be a chaise longue but the photos show a small sofa with an annoyingly shaped back at only one end and no back at the other, with definitely no support for sitting sideways on with your feet up. (If you're looking at the link you need to let the photos scroll through a bit.)

There was a very snobby boutique near where I worked at one time. The staff were once so rude to one customer they didn't think fitted their demographic that she left in tears. Her irate husband stormed in to tell them they had just lost the thousands of pounds she was going to spend on a cruise wardrobe.

Snobby the place may have been, but once, in the window a sale label proclaimed that a "berry" was half price.

heldinadream · 26/08/2024 10:43

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar tell 'em. Maybe not until after you've left, but please don't let that abomination pass. Chez lounge indeed. They need a thorough excoriating for that.

@Chersfrozenface I had to think for long minutes to realise that berry was meant to be beret. Which autocorrect, by the way, wanted to change to ferret.
I thought ferrets were more a trouser department item. 😂

The room has a delightful beret coloured carpet too!

Oh my god 🤦

I'm hopeful that it's an old photo and the room will actually be a little less 1990s, but it's rural Ireland, so probably not. I was looking at the photos for the classic rooms and they have different rooms in different decorative styles, some more current than others so hopefully the same for executive rooms and I will get a not beret and beige theme.

I once saw an advertisement for flats in London that boasted views of ‘The Shad’ and ‘The Gurkin’.

My daughter stayed in an Air BnB that had two Chester draws in each bedroom.

Nooo! Husband storming in doesn't cut it - how could she miss the chance to swan back in there loaded with posh shopping bags to tell them they'd made a 'big mistake. Huge.'

MountUnpleasant · 09/09/2024 08:34

😂😂 Hotels are some of the worst offenders for this sort of faux pas. They're non-posh people trying really hard to create posh vibes, and it's just embarrassing a lot of the time.

I don’t really mind these kind of inaccuracies. It’s clear what the writer meant and half of me is impressed that they didn’t bother googling how to spell it.

There were not one but TWO hair salons in my hometown named Deja Vous.

There could be an argument that they were deliberately expanding on the well-known phrase to make a point - i.e. 'we're so good that we already know what would suit you' or similar. I rather doubt that, though!

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 13/09/2024 04:30

I'm sure I read that 'chez lounge' is an acceptable alternative. Whether t'was always thus or that's because it's considered that so many people getting something wrong for long enough somehow makes it 'correct', I couldn't say.

Even said correctly, the name of the item of furniture just reminds me of that irritating song by Wet Leg which seems to have very few other words in the lyrics.

For me, I'd simply avoid it altogether and just go full-on Partridge: 'banquette' for me every single time!

I know it's not exactly the same thing, but it's a crying shame to waste the opportunity to use the word 'banquette' on any occasion when describing something roughly approximating to it Grin
