Gone potty

My understanding of "go potty" is to go insane or crazy. But I've seen it used quite a lot (on Instagram, admittedly) to refer to going to the loo. I just don't get it - only a child uses a potty, so why would you use this phrase for an adult (or worse, a dog?!)

Yes some adults say go potty it's baby talk.

betterangels · 29/07/2024 14:39

This one makes my head hurt. No adult should say that.

My MIL says she needs to find a potty when she’s in need of a public lavatory.

She’s from Alabama and uses ‘y’all’ unironically 🤷‍♀️

An Amercan friend always says he's letting his dog out to "Go potty" so I assumed it was an American thing.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 29/07/2024 18:59

You often heat Americans saying it, it's grated for us but I guess it's normal for a lot of people to say it

There's an episode of The Big Bang Theory were they discuss it

It's an American saying. 'Go potty' is our Souhtern US friends, dog's trigger word to poop. We look after her regularly and I can't bring myself to say it.

I've realised 'go party' sounds the same with an English accent as go potty with a U S accent so that's what I do!

This made me LOL.

On a visit to London My MIL insisted she be photographed next to a giant billboard advertising a yogurt with the strap line ‘Go Potty’.

This is brilliant!

Likewise I find the word "poo" used to go to the bathroom cringeworthy. It should be limited to potty training. You either are going to the bathroom or not. No need to announce you're going to take a shit.
