Hence why

This is incorrect, right?

"I love the sun, hence why I booked a holiday to Mallorca".

Surely it should be either "I love the sun, THAT'S WHY I booked a holiday to Mallorca", or "I love the sun, HENCE I booked a holiday to Mallorca"?

Seeing it everywhere and starting to doubt myself.

@Misthios You are correct

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2024 09:16

I'm not sure if it's incorrect, but perhaps slightly changes the emphasis versus the simpler versions?

KnickerlessParsons · 17/07/2024 12:49

@Misthios I agree - you are correct.

Yes, because 'hence' means 'that is the reason why'. So they're saying 'that's the reason why why...'

What do they think 'hence' means if they have to add 'why' after it?

Compash · 17/07/2024 12:59

Reminds me of the urban legend about the lecturer who killed himself after his first term of teaching when he realised that 'hirsute' does not mean 'therefore'... 🙈

upinaballoon · 18/07/2024 23:02

No, no need for the 'why' after 'hence'.

I am reminded of ' ..the reason being is that......".
