Hi. Im not normally a pendant, but I was thinking something similar today about burned and burnt. Do they mean the same thing?

By the way, I consider the 'EE' sound to be for LEAPED.

Elephantsbreath · 08/04/2008 23:38

yes burned and burnt see where you're coming from.

I'm no pedant either, hope they don't mind.

Let me through, I'm a pedant

They are interchangeable - doesn't matter which you use. Same with burned/burnt. Although I agree with Nora, I'd say 'leeped' for 'leaped' and 'lept' for 'leapt'.

Elephantsbreath · 08/04/2008 23:52

policywonk, ooh nice badge, sometimes I read out leaped as lept! for dramatic effect - is this ok too, in your view? ie Noddy leaped (lept!) out.

It's fine, I'd guess! Don't expect the police to break your door down any time soon...

Interchangeable BUT a frog leaps. It leaped (EE). Never leapt. To me, anyway.

Cali. Although you do realise that there are those in Pedants' Corner who believe that US spelling and grammar is a crime on a par with bigamy or animal molestation?

Elephantsbreath · 09/04/2008 10:27

Oh I'm not frightened of the police Policywonk, I just need to know I'm saying it right. You see, I really think I have it in me to be a pedant.

Burned is a verb, burnt is an adjective.

policywonk · 09/04/2008 21:57

'Burned' can also be an adjective, a variant spelling of 'burnt'.
