Pedants' corner

It's shoo-in, not shoeing

Unless, of course your talking about shoeing a horse.

The word, when talking about a definite winner, is 'a shoo-in'.

I read two different articles in my newspaper this morning written by two different people, both made the claim that Labour is a 'shoeing' for the next general election.

Does nobody read these things before they're printed?

Proofreading is such a pavlova

Should this be 'you're' if we're being pedants?

Possibly not grammatically incorrect but can I add to gonna/wanna to the banned list?

newtb · 09/05/2024 15:46

Bored of instead of with. Annoying.

ChockysChimichanga · 09/05/2024 16:00

Or giving someone a shoeing.

pigsDOfly · 09/05/2024 17:33

@blue345 Oh God. How embarrassing😊

Of course it should be you're. Seems I also forgot to read what I'd typed before I pressed the button. Oh dear.

You can give someone a good shoeing but I agree that people usually mean shoo-in.

ThePoshUns · 09/05/2024 17:35

I hear you OP

crumbpet · 09/05/2024 17:44

Can you not just get over it?

The good thing about embracing being a grammar pedant is that we're good-natured when our mistakes are pointed out.

I haven't yet dared point out to my boss that one of the company names in our weekend email (to our client list of thousands) was incorrect today.

Absolutely. If we aren't prepared to accept our own mistakes being pointed out to us then we have no business being pedants😊

Not sure whether it was a deliberate edit or not but your post made me panic that I'd misspelt 'grammar'!

Do you also feel you've really let yourself down when you spot a grammar mistake in your own writing? It's a highly uninspiring superpower but it's the only one I have.

pigsDOfly · 14/05/2024 14:07

@blue345 Sorry, you're spelling is correct. It was me again, not reading before I posted. I really must stop doing that.

I type too quickly and tend to leave bits out, and as I say, I often don't read before I post, which is probably obvious.

I've always been a poor typist because of the speed at which I type and the lack of attention to detail and it's getting worse the older I get.

Must do better.

Sticking with the feet theme, though at a bit of a tangent….its toe the line, not tow. I see that so often.

Bignanna · 14/05/2024 14:49

I heard a radio presenter say “whooping cough “as if it were spelt Wooping cough!

Bignanna · 14/05/2024 14:52

“She turned round and said…” Really? You saw her turn round, did you? Also, How do you know she turned round when she was speaking to you using her phone?

ClawdiaCattipuss · 14/05/2024 16:15

I do enjoy a poster correcting grammar as they make a grammatical error themselves Grin

That was very common usage where I grew up in Essex years ago. I think it is a regional dialect thing.
