IT’S NOT HALF TERM.

What is it ‘half’ of? Nothing!

its END of term. It’s Easter Break.

Thank you.

I have mixed feelings as I totally agree with you and used to get rage inside when people called it half term.
I've now started joining them as everyone says it so I'm just as bad now and also call it half term.

Yes it winds me up too!

Unless you're on a 2 semester system like my school, in which case it's half term.

Yes! This is the Easter Holidays.
That said when I started working in schools it took me a little while to get used to ‘this half term’ meaning the actual term rather than the break.

"I haven't planned as far ahead as May yet"

<funny looks>

Totally agree, OP.

Can I also offer up people who call the day after an actual half term "next term"?

This one really winds me up, way more than it should.

Yup
I wonder if it's cos some think they can't mention Christian holidays any more, plus the way in which we now have six terms instead of three - everything's become "half term"!

Report
Lifeinlists · 23/03/2024 18:54

Where are there six terms @JanglyBeads ? It's usually three with a week's holiday in the middle of each ie the half term (holiday).

Schools have names for each term - autumn, spring and summer being the usual.

This calling every holiday half term is just a recent thing - nothing to do with Easter etc.

JanglyBeads · 23/03/2024 19:05

Most schools now talk in terms (!) of Term 1, Term 2, Term 3, Term 4, Term 5 and Term 6.

Report
Zonder · 23/03/2024 19:09

I work in lots of schools and haven't heard any say term 1,2,3,4,5,6. It's still autumn spring and summer round here.

Not noticed they can't mention anything Christian either - everyone is looking forward to the Easter holiday unless they think it's half term!

Oh ok, thanks @JanglyBeads Term has evidently acquired a new meaning.
So half term is a bit redundant, in that case.

Most schools now talk in terms (!) of Term 1, Term 2, Term 3, Term 4, Term 5 and Term 6.

Really? I’ve not heard that at all in my cluster of Primaries. We still very much use Spring1/Summer2 etc

Maybe it’s area specific.

JanglyBeads · 24/03/2024 13:29

I know several schools that use it, not limited to my authority. But it seems there is lots of differing terminology!

I only clicked on this thread to tell you it isn't half term. Then clocked where it was posted. As you were.

DCs primary school switched to terms 1-6 when they were there (10ish years ago.) Technically there are no half terms in that case, although they still used half term to describe the week long breaks. With Christmas, Easter and summer being the other holidays.
