He or Him, not Fred or Joe

I've noticed something I think is a bit odd.

I've often heard some women (this is not bashing women, it's an observation) when chatting in a group or to each other refer to who I assume is their husband or partner as 'he' or 'him' without any preamble or talking about him first and referring back in that context. For example:

"I'm going to have botox on Friday."
"Oh, he wouldn't like it if I did that."

"Did you watch that post office drama over Christmas?"
"No but I said to him we should watch it."

Examples are illustrative only!

Are we supposed to know who they mean? I mean, I think I do, but wouldn't you just say "I don't think Fred would like it."?
