She was sat

I saw a thread over on AIBU where the OP was complaining about how her daughter “is sat” on uncomfortable chairs. I always find it so irritating that people say “sat on” rather that “sitting on” yet it seems to be becoming the norm! I feel hormonal today and had to stop myself from commenting on the thread, so I came here to moan 😂

OP posts:

Well, "is sat" is clearly wrong, but "sat on" is not always incorrect. For example - "I went to dinner at an Arabic restaurant and I sat on a cushion on the floor."

No excuse, ever, for "She was sat"

Thank you for raising this, “xxx was sat” seems to be becoming normal but it still makes me 🤯

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 14:44

The OP on that thread meant it as "she was seated" - ie told to sit there.
Whether "is say" is correct have no idea. We never did that SPaG malarkey when I were a gal.

Needmorelego · 10/05/2023 14:45

"is sat" not "say" 🙄

Also, ‘was stood’ instead of ‘was standing’. Both are regional dialect forms where I live but I’ve noticed that people who primarily use Standard English when speaking will use them too.

"Was sat" in the sense of "I sat in front of the television..." makes my teeth itch.

I agree it’s part of certain dialects.

My favourite is “she was stood standing” 😁

Oh I hate this! I am not from the UK and it isn't a figure of speech I've heard before, I find it so grating.

Also not sure why it bothers me so much, but I am with you OP!!

ReadersD1gest · 10/05/2023 15:47

Was sat is only correct if you were physically placed there by an external hand.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 10/05/2023 15:49

ReadersD1gest That is what my mother used to tell me. She hated 'was sat'. I hadn't noticed it until she pointed it out and now it irritates me too.

pigsDOfly · 10/05/2023 20:14

Yes, this is becoming common usage now, as far as I can tell.

As an avid reader I'm finding that it's now seems to be acceptable in many modern books. I've also come across it in certain quality newspapers as well, more in opinion pieces than reporting, it has to be said, but does nobody check such things any more?

pigsDOfly · 10/05/2023 20:17

*Oops, Didn't mean to type 'finding that it's now seems'.

That rather proves my point. Words need to be read before they are put out for public consumption.

Bit unpleasant to start a thread referencing another poster's mistake.
