... "thou" as an abbreviation of "though" ?

I've noticed a lot of people on here use it. I always read it as "thou" in the Shakesperian sense. It really bugs me.

Don't even get me started on 'discusting'.

I hate "thou" too. I always hear it in my mind in the Shakespearian sense too.

I had to deal with an ad at work the other day for a local PCT's sexual health services. It was desperately trying to get down with the kids.

I have read 'I don't no', or 'I don't kno' more times than I care to remember while marking work in school. Sometimes I've seen 'Dunno' for an answer. [Sigh]

A friend of mine teachers English, she gets students at A level who cannot explain what a verb is, let alone an adverb.

I proof read stuff our Editor-in-Chief writes. It's dreadful. And she has a first class English degree.

Blandmum · 16/02/2008 09:23

Teaches

The r was a typo!

I teach students at A level who don't know the difference between their and there.

I abbreviate it to tho and only in instant messaging. Thou definitely looks wrong.

KatyMac · 16/02/2008 09:27

I use tho' is that wrong?

NomDePlume · 16/02/2008 09:30

Re the use of 'kno' why not just type the one extra letter ? It's not exactly the most space-saving of abbreviations is it ?

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 16/02/2008 09:32

KatyMac, at least tho' reads phonetically as 'though' and you have put an apostrophe to show that you know that there are letters missing !

OP posts:
Twiglett · 16/02/2008 09:37

yes tho' is wrong

ZippiBabes · 16/02/2008 09:45

branflake81 · 18/02/2008 14:53

I work in a university and have seen (formal) correspondance from students that uses text speak/spellings. I'm shocked.

LittleWonder · 18/02/2008 17:26

Americanisms? I am quite used to seeing 'lite' on low-fat items. However on a recent trip over there, I stared at the stove thinking they had some magical low-fat setting to cook with. It took a while but eventually it dawned on me - 'lite' was simply the button to light the bloody thing. Actually, on that same trip to the kitchen, I was helping a friend make dinner and the recipe called for a 'Dutch Oven' - this is actually a casserole dish - but if you look it up online, as I had to - I'm afraid it comes up with www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Dutch+Oven&defid=517479

Hallgerda · 19/02/2008 08:07

ZippiBabes, I turned into a pumpkin at around midnight along with most of the other Londoners, so I missed the opportunity.
