.....the story involved a little boy trying to Save the Whales. After trying the bank, "we only save money here", he went to a church and the priest in the confessional shooed him away saying...

"we only save soles here"

but that's not pedantic is it? It's not unreasonable to expect that books for school age children should be grammatically correct with proper spelling....is it?

was it a play on words? you know fish-related?

fryalot · 07/02/2008 10:57

wouldn't have thought so.

I went to dd1's parent evening last week where her English teacher recommended some books for her to read. He wrote them down on a random bit of paper so we wouldn't forget their names.

Am struggling to find a book called "Abomonation" but found one called "Abomination" no problem.

Was tempted to pull him up on his spelling at the time, but I resisted.

Tis 'orrible when schools, teachers, and books that are teaching our children to read get it wrong

(grr)

Maybe they were collecting them to fix the church roof?

FAQ · 07/02/2008 11:01

sounds like a play on words to me......

Cappuccino · 07/02/2008 11:04

it is a pun

it is a joke

Cappuccino · 07/02/2008 11:06

I am more that the book suggests that the church would shoo someone away

TheFallenMadonna · 07/02/2008 11:07

Is it not grammatically correct?

Agree that it's a pun. DS would laugh like a drain and repeat it, with explanation, ad nauseam.

LardyMardyDaisy · 07/02/2008 11:12

didn't think about it being a pun , but not sure five year olds would even get it though!
