Why does one not use capital letters when writing the 4 seasons ?
I think they should have capital letters.

No, I think they are common nouns, therefore uncapitalised

LadyEloise1 · 14/11/2022 15:31

But why are they common nouns ?Blush

Possibly because they are not a specific thing? It’s not a specific period between two dates, but a general time?. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I don’t know!

LadyEloise1 · 14/11/2022 16:06

They are faitrly specific seasons. Smile

Yes. I see no logic to it. I have a vague memory that we were taught to capitalise the seasons, but teachers get lots of things wrong.
The only vaguely logical idea I can come up with is that months and days of the week are mainly named after deities or emperors so have retained their capital letters whereas the seasons are just seasons.

LadyEloise1 · 17/11/2022 14:11

Well I think they should be capitalised and from now on I shall capitalise them.
Pedants will be scandalised.

We used to capitalise them as nouns, but they're not always nouns, e.g. wearing summer clothes, let's winter in this hut, spring onions.

When did we stop?

Which looks better / more correct in a sentence?

In Spring the flowers begin to bloom.
In spring the flowers begin to bloom.

April is a month in spring.
April is a month in Spring.

Lower case

LadyEloise1 · 19/12/2022 00:54

I know lower case is correct but I prefer the capital letter. Smile
