So? It's a chat forum. People chat in their dialect.

AuntieDickhead · 25/10/2022 19:01

And?

SwedishEdith · 25/10/2022 19:02

I like yous. It's logical. I know it's Irish/Liverpool but I think of it like the French vous.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 25/10/2022 19:02

It’s a staple of specific dialects. More fool the rest of us for having no word to convey ‘vous’ in the English language.

Footle · 25/10/2022 19:03

What's your point? You'll also find some ye's ( I find the apostrophe necessary to indicate the plural) if you are very lucky.

OP is posting in Pedants Corner, which is the correct place for her post. She’s correctly noting the incorrect use of the plural for “you”. Whether people like it or not is neither here or there - she’s in the right place to comment on it.

@BigBagOfPasta - it’s the equivalent of the USA “y’all” - both are lazy English 😉

Hugasauras · 25/10/2022 19:11

I love yous. It's so useful.

But its not incorrect. Just not widely used in England.

When my best friend first met her (Irish) wife we went out for coffee. At the end i said something along the lines of "so lovely to see/meet you. You'll have to come for dinner one day"
Her now wife thought I didn't like her, because in Irish "you" is singular, and assumed tge invite was just for friend. I didn't realise that in Ireland the use the plural "yous" so meant both of them.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/10/2022 19:15

What's wrong with 'you lot'? Colloquial and easily understood throughout the British Isles, I'd have thought.
And much better than 'you guys'...

FitAt50 · 25/10/2022 19:15

It's very commonly used in Scotland.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/10/2022 19:17

I have many Irish relatives and they all seem to understand perfectly well that 'you' can be either singular or plural.

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2022 19:21

As others have said, 'yous' is widely used in parts of Ireland as a dialect variation of the plural 'you'. 'Ye' is used in the same way.

Grammatically it's actually quite useful to distinguish between plural and singular.

As an immigrant to Ireland I've picked up 'ye' but 'yous' is not common in my area.

We do. You. The French isn’t plural (or have I been getting it wrong across two centuries?! T’is possible!)

JenniferBarkley · 25/10/2022 19:22

I love youse. Formal English really lacks a distinction between single and plural you.

Trulyweird1 · 25/10/2022 19:22

FitAt50 · 25/10/2022 19:15

It’s not used in my part of Scotland - it’s more west coast to my ears.

pictish · 25/10/2022 19:23

It’s par for the course in Scotland. I say it all the time, though never write it. Think it should be made an official plural of you.

pictish · 25/10/2022 19:24

I’m an east coaster btw. I’ve heard it said all over Scotland though. Seems ubiquitous to me.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 25/10/2022 19:24

I think of it as Essex / East London dialect. I must admit I am not a fan and have to stop myself from thinking the ‘user’ is a bit thick. Tommy Mallet uses is. Clearly not thick - made a brilliant business. I kick myself when I judge.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 25/10/2022 19:25

(And just to check … ‘you’ IS plural or singular, yes?)

You lot sounds a touch aggressive and is one more syllable.

VerveClique · 25/10/2022 19:27

It’s a lovely affectionate, colloquial term.

deliverooyoutoo · 25/10/2022 19:30

Youse in Northern Ireland is common parlance.

Joolsin · 25/10/2022 19:30

Yous/Yiz/Ye/Yizzers/Youzuns all used in various parts of Ireland - all meaning you plural.

youkiddingme · 25/10/2022 19:52

Language evolves.
