I've just spotted my first 'yous' on here Confused

Shock
OP posts:
deliverooyoutoo · 25/10/2022 20:32

It's common in Hiberno English though?

JenniferBarkley · 25/10/2022 20:32

Youse/yous/ye aren't incorrect though. They're informal regional dialect, widely used and long established. Perfectly fine for informal communicate, which is what MN is. Not suitable for formal writing sure, just like you would write sick or ill rather than poorly, to use an English colloquialism.

Fleur405 · 25/10/2022 20:33

I hate this so much whenever I go to Glasgow. Otherwise love weegies!

Malfi · 25/10/2022 20:35

I think yous is fine. It’s dialect.

Bit of an overreaction to hate it.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/10/2022 20:39

Aww, I like it! I associate it with friendly scousers.

Unforgettablefire · 25/10/2022 20:40

We say it here in the north east as well.

Nothingbuttheglory · 25/10/2022 20:41

the incorrect use of the plural for “you”

It is entirely correct if you're speaking Geordie, Northumbrian or Pitmatic.

IntentionalError · 25/10/2022 20:43

‘Yous’ is very good word. Mu Irish grandparents used it all the time. As kids, we knew that yous referred to us collectively, whereas you referred to an individual. It’s a useful distinction.

Footle · 25/10/2022 23:14

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen , you have been getting it wrong. "Vous" is French for two different kinds of "you".

According to context, it's either the formal way of addressing one person you don't have a close relationship with; or the normal way of addressing more than one person, even if you are on close terms with all of them. "Tu" is for addressing one person whom you know well.

I'm sure I could have explained that better. Dormez bien.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/10/2022 23:18

We were never allowed say yous. However ye was so standard I didn't realise English people don't say it until I moved to London.

Kanaloa · 25/10/2022 23:20

It’s appropriate to use dialect on an informal chat forum. It isn’t a mistake in the way that ‘chester draws’ is incorrect, because very few people (I’d say likely nobody) would not understand that ‘yous’ isn’t correct. They’d know the correct word is you, but they’re deliberately using dialect in an informal setting.

OldKingCole · 25/10/2022 23:30

Basically in Ireland it’s yous for Dublin north side , you for Dublin south side and ye everywhere else
😀

LadybirdsAreNeverHappy · 25/10/2022 23:33

I’m Irish and saying yous (or yis) is totally natural for me when I’m speaking but I would never write it down because it just looks odd. Even in informal communication. Teachers often defended the use of it when we were at school because it’s useful but of course it’s not proper English.
OP, if you don’t like “yous”, you will definitely not like the plural “yours” - youser or yisser 😄

OP is posting in Pedants Corner, which is the correct place for her post. She’s correctly noting the incorrect use of the plural for “you”. Whether people like it or not is neither here or there - she’s in the right place to comment on it.

@BigBagOfPasta - it’s the equivalent of the USA “y’all” - both are lazy English 😉

Actually, it's Pedants' Corner. 😉

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2022 23:42

There's nowt wrong with using perfectly comprehensible dialect on MN. Was the OP really confused and shocked by it, as the emoticons imply? Hmm The confusion seems odd since, as others have noted, 'yous' is clear and unambiguous unlike 'you'.

Thank you!

Pedants’ Corner used to be a place for people to discuss interesting language developments. It’s only recently become a place just to slag off different dialectal usages. Definitely know which I prefer.

belleager · 25/10/2022 23:51

Great word. Someone suggested 'you lot' above, but you wouldn't use that for just two people, would you? And to me it sounds a bit rude or hostile.

KnickerlessParsons · 25/10/2022 23:52

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 25/10/2022 19:02

It’s a staple of specific dialects. More fool the rest of us for having no word to convey ‘vous’ in the English language.

We do. It's "you".
"Tu" is the equivalent of "thou/thee/thine". We don't those words any more though.

Indiana2021 · 25/10/2022 23:56

Very common in Scotland. When I hear it though my eye starts to twitch😉

In some cases 'you both' or 'you all' is helpful rather than just 'you'. Like the time I was invited to dinner by a boss and didn't realise the 'you' was intended to include my other half.

hugefanofcheese · 26/10/2022 00:07

It's not incorrect, it's regional. I use it deliberately as I think it's useful having a distinct second person plural pronoun.

Neither is incorrect.

You sound stuck up.
