Shock that's a long list

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 11:44

Hahah, yeah, and I am only just beginning!

checks her spellings and grammar

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 12:07

Oh, I'm not perfect, believe me, but the important thing is that I think it's important and I do try!

TheGetaway · 06/08/2022 12:08

I bet you’re fun at parties

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 12:13

@TheGetaway are you lost? Chat and AIBU are that way -->

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 12:13

Anyway I don't go to parties cos I hate them! (And am not usually invited :-D )

Someone on a WhatsApp group wrote 'prolly' instead of probably.

My husband says them instead of those. I ignore him when he does this.

I wonder why 😂

abadgutfeeling · 06/08/2022 12:14

Mischievous pronounced incorrectly.

But seriously though, I wish mumsnet HQ would rename this board Pedant's corner and wait to see how many people explode 😅

declutteringmymind · 06/08/2022 12:16

But auto correct is a nightmare, I often have to change the predicted text for what I actually meant to write, and i don't proof read all my messages or posts so I'm horrified when I re-read things.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 06/08/2022 12:18

No one, not no-one or noone.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2022 12:20

If I pronounced the R in forward I think my family would have me carted away, doesn't sound right at all 🤣

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 06/08/2022 12:22

@DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms, you are a person after my own heart. All those are on my list too.

I also feel sorry for shops / restaurants that have rogue apostrophes in their signs and menus. It seems no one knew any better to correct them.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 06/08/2022 12:24

His/he's

Aaaaaaaaaargh!

Rosehugger · 06/08/2022 12:24

I can't say as I check for mistakes other than a brief glance at what I've typed (with my thumb!) and sometimes make absolute howlers I know full well to be incorrect. But on here once it's posted, that's that. It's not a document for work, I treat typing online comments like chatting down the pub with someone.

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 12:25

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I'm Scottish so we have very pronounced "r"s!

Clique/click

QuestionableMouse · 06/08/2022 12:28

Does it really matter?

I'm a published author, have a MA English and even so I just can't get worked up over stuff like this. There's times is does matter but in general, for informal language use, the meaning can still be understood and so the text is doing its job.

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 12:30

@QuestionableMouse no, it doesn't really matter in that it's not life and death. Like most things on MN. It's just a bit of light-hearted fun! And in the correct place ie "Pedant's Corner"!

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 12:31

@QuestionableMouse I assume you meant "there are times" instead of "there's times" :-)

Gifted, loaned, yourself, and can I get are my worst nightmares and thank you for this!

Someone on a WhatsApp group wrote 'prolly' instead of probably.

My husband says them instead of those. I ignore him when he does this.

"Prolly" is an oft used abbreviation though.

I did wince at this greeting card...

WhackingPhoenix · 06/08/2022 12:53

There’s nothing wrong with using someone’s name when you speak to them, especially if you are dealing with something quite personal and need to keep them engaged.

I triage patients as part of my job role so I tend to call them by name during the call, as it centres the conversation around them.

“Yourself” can get to fuck, though.
