I see defiantly used all the time, in sentences like "I defiantly locked the door".

It makes me nostalgic for the days when it was just misspelled as "definately", but that's now been replaced with "defiantly".

EmmaH2022 · 06/08/2022 13:23

I have been told I am wrong for saying "my sister and I" - by an English teacher, who tells me "it's all new rules now".

New rules-really?? Do explain!!

Surely, it just depends on the sentence as to whether you use I or me?

Sam gave the sandwiches to Sally and me.
Sally and I ate Sam’s sandwiches.

Remove the name that’s with the me/I and see what makes sense.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/08/2022 13:56

I really hate the incorrect use of ‘was’-we have a couple of TAs at school that do this a lot. For example…

You was working really hard in maths today, wasn’t you?
What was you doing in the cloakroom just then?

Sandrine1982 · 06/08/2022 13:58

I love this ❤

Summererfluff · 06/08/2022 14:00

I hate it when people use "and I" instead of "and me".
"And I" is only used where you would say "I" if the other person in the sentence wasn't there, otherwise it doesn't make sense!

"DH and I went for a walk"
is correct rather than
"DH and me went for a walk"
("I went for a walk" vs "Me went for a walk")

"They bought a present for DH and I" should be
"They bought a present for DH and me"
("They bought a present for I" vs "They bought a present for me").

When I die I will come back and haunt my brother who does this all the time.

Ladyof2022 · 06/08/2022 14:03

I am massively fat but I had to leave every online slimming group because every poster, in every post, wrote "loose" instead of "lose" and it wound me up to bursting point.

SleepingAgent · 06/08/2022 14:03

I think I love you OP.

I agree with all of these, except the "can I get ..." one. Sadly I do this, it's habit picked up from my circle of friends I think.

Would of/could of is the worst for me. I hate it! Grin

I'm Scottish too and love a rolling R.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/08/2022 14:05

Using ‘less than’, when it should be ‘fewer than’ is very irritating as well!

Freckl · 06/08/2022 14:08

@DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms

"Decimate" historically means to kill one in ten (inhabitants, soldiers) in cold blood as a means to destroy an enemy. Not simply "reduce by 10%". I think the current use of it to mean flatten, destroy etc is widely accepted and has been for decades despite the origin of the word.

[cringe] Ironically, the card is being sold to benefit an educational charity…

Noooo!

Freckl · 06/08/2022 14:10

"It needs replaced" is perfectly fine in Scottish dialect.

He did explain and I was baffled. Then another lady tried explaining it to me and I was still baffled.

I have since asked a couple of other teaching contacts who said any of these variations are okay, but use of "Sally and I" is considered old fashioned.

I'll stick with being old fashioned.

I am also fat and hate this.

Literally is another one.

No, you did not literally die you fuckwit.

Riapia · 06/08/2022 14:32

There have been a few threads with “gonna” and “wanna” in them recently.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/08/2022 14:59

use of "Sally and I" is considered old fashioned

As a teacher, I say that is bollocks…

SoupDragon · 06/08/2022 15:16

A lot of your complaints about "pronunciation" are just cultural or down to accents.

Just because your accent pronounces Rs doesn't mean all do. It sounds ridiculous in a London accent.

Aks seems to be common amongst Afro Caribbean communities.

TwoMonthsOff · 06/08/2022 15:25

Is ‘Baited’ as in ‘Bated Breath’ on the list ?

AliceBear91 · 06/08/2022 15:25

DisplayPurposesOnly · 06/08/2022 12:24

His/he's

Aaaaaaaaaargh!

Finally someone else shares my pain on this one! I see this all the time online and it makes me want to scream!

Also reminds me of wont/ want, which is equally infuriating.

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 15:26

Thanks everyone, I have added a few more to my list!

I think an I error I make myself is saying "the couple are" instead of "the couple is". But I am always trying to improve!

Stayathomenamechange · 06/08/2022 15:31

As pp have pointed out, it's "proNUNciation"... Sorry ;)

I actually don't mind most of these even though I recognise they're incorrect. I'm guilty of the occasional "Can I get..."

However I get really wound up by brought instead of bought. "I just brought a new car", aaarrgghh!

Oh and I've noticed people saying "infer" when they mean "imply", presumably because they think it sounds posher?!

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 06/08/2022 15:51

<carries on adding to list and correct my own spelling thereon!>

Love you for this OP. Agree with all the above.

QuestionableMouse · 06/08/2022 12:28

Does it really matter?

I'm a published author, have a MA English and even so I just can't get worked up over stuff like this. There's times is does matter but in general, for informal language use, the meaning can still be understood and so the text is doing its job.

Yes, it does matter.

lot123 · 06/08/2022 15:57

I love your list. The random inclusion of possessive apostrophes upsets me more than their omission.

Please may I add electric instead of electricity?
