Pedants' corner

It's a 'lie in' not a 'lay in'!

tashadoesntlikeyouandrew · 25/06/2022 09:25

Just reading a thread about having a 'lay in'.

AIBU to think it's called a 'lie in' NOT a 'lay in'?

Lay in just sounds wrong.

Sat instead of sitting is also local here and has been for donkeys years. Certainly as long as I can remember. People are perfectly able to use the correct terms when they need to but in their everyday conversations they use local variants

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 11:40

Oops I got sucked back in!! Grin I’m supposed to be helping to build a stud wall today and MN is a great procrastination tool...

ShinyMe · 25/06/2022 11:42

FreyaStorm · 25/06/2022 11:36

The one that gets on my wick is “jag” instead of “jab”

i.e. I had my Covid jag

It set my teeth on edge.

Again, standard and acceptable in Scottish English.

There are so many perfectly correct Scottish variants around which often seem to be disproportionately irritating to many English-English people for some reason.

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 11:45

I think that’s just because they think it’s a mistake - they’re not aware that ‘jag’ is correct, they presume that the person has misheard ‘jab’.

Apropos of Scottish terms, I absolutely love the word ‘outwith’.

I think making a blatant thread to act superior about someone else's thread title is worse than using an incorrect word.

What a horrible thing to do

This. ^ People use different ways of speaking and saying things. And it's often regional. To start a thread poking fun and posting disparaging remarks about the way people speak is just spiteful and pathetic.

When someone said 'poorly' instead of 'ill' a few weeks ago, a poster said 'are you 5? Only silly immature children say 'poorly.' My great aunt, and my grandmother say 'poorly,' and they are both in their 90s. Are THEY silly immature children???! Call them silly immature children, and ask 'are you 5?' and you'll bloody well regret it pretty smartish. You wouldn't be saying it again!

Many sayings and words are regional, and starting threads like this - saying someone's way of saying something is 'wrong' whilst mocking them, and encouraging others to mock too, makes you look like a spiteful and unpleasant oik.

Horrible thread @tashadoesntlikeyouandrew Shame on you. No wonder you made up a new username

LakieLady · 25/06/2022 12:26

I wish there was more sympathy for us spag pedants. Things like "should of" make me wince, like the sound of nails on a blackboard.

We can't help it, and I do my utmost not to mention it because a) I realise it's my problem, not anyone else's, and b) it comes across as being snooty and elitist, and I'm not.

I think pedantry should be recognised as a disability. 😉

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 13:01

@LakieLady it has the same effect on me. And I include my own mistakes and errors in that! It isn’t about snootiness or elitism for me, either. I’m just very much about rules and getting things right, when it comes to language and many other things in life. Tbf there is a section for pedants/pedantry and that’s where you’ll find that sympathy I’m sure.

tashadoesntlikeyouandrew · 25/06/2022 13:38

Omg it's a light hearted thread - hardly being "superior". Hilarious that some people are so offended by it - go and have a lie down, or maybe a lay down? Grin

That I find very odd, do people who know the correct way to say something really then deliberately say it wrongly because they are having an everyday conversation

That's not a thing is it? I can't imagine how that works

Dahlietta · 25/06/2022 13:54

As for “needs fixed” vs “needs fixing”, the former is standard in Scottish English.

It's also common in NI, I think. I think both of these are colloquialisms for 'it needs to be fixed' (and the Scots/NI one therefore actually makes more sense)

HostaFireandIce · 25/06/2022 13:55

Totally agree! It's triggering Wink

You took a thread title from a poster this morning and made a thread about their language. There is absolutely nothing 'light hearted' about doing that to someone. It was quite obvious, very deliberate and absolutely stinks of superiority.

lolil · 25/06/2022 14:09

Posted too soon, forgot to mention the now added rudeness.

You don't look as good as you think OP.

tashadoesntlikeyouandrew · 25/06/2022 14:26

@lolil wow you're really keen to be offended.

Yes, this thread is about language prompted by another thread.

No, I haven't made a thread about their language.

It's a subtle difference that seems lost on you. As you can see from the thread, some people use lay in, some people use lie in.

I personally have only ever heard it said as 'lie in' until recently a friend said 'lay in' and genuinely thought she said it in error.

What does this even mean? How do you know what I think?

I'm not offended. I just think your thread was nasty. I'm allowed to say so.

CuriousCatfish · 25/06/2022 14:27

Bit of an arsehole move to pick up on another posters use of language.

Is that you @lolil with a name change.

I think we all see things in life that make us think of other things. I happened to mention I saw a thread that made me think is it "lay in" or "lie in".

It's really not an "arsehole move". And I think maybe you need some perspective.

I actually think your responses are more mean than my post.

CuriousCatfish · 25/06/2022 14:49

I'm not lolil. I do agree with her though.

lolil · 25/06/2022 15:00

No I didn't name change, ask MNHQ to verify please.

The accusation is a strange one.

Of course it is.

When I go to the doctor I'd say "Hello doctor, thank you for seeing me." then "I've had a lot of pain in both of my feet."

When I get home I'd say "y'alright mum?" She will ask me why I saw the 'quack' and I'll tell her "cos of me plates."

That's how it works. Why do people on MN forget everything about the real world when they log in?

palygold · 25/06/2022 20:02

Agree about lay in.

How about 'I was laying in bed'?

I always picture a giant egg, but I've heard it so many times over the years.

PAFMO · 25/06/2022 21:58

Frazzled2207 · 25/06/2022 10:15

with you on this drive me up the wall.
LIE IN
not that I get any, ever

Yet in 11 words, you make 3 mistakes.
Don't they drive you up the wall? Is it just other people?

upinaballoon · 25/06/2022 22:00

IcedOatLatte · 25/06/2022 10:28

Clearly it does to all the posters who are agreeing.

You not being bothered doesn't equal proper use language not mattering

If the words we use don't matter then it doesn't make any difference whether I say, "He handed the knife to us" or "You handed the knife to him". Any old word any old place won't do.

It's a TAAT and it's against talk guidelines
It's also a pretty twatty thing to do.
(I'm not the other poster with a namechange either- it's possible that more than one person thinks what you've done is nasty)
