It's a 'lie in' not a 'lay in'!

Just reading a thread about having a 'lay in'.

AIBU to think it's called a 'lie in' NOT a 'lay in'?

Lay in just sounds wrong.

OP posts:
youdialwetile · 25/06/2022 10:32

Confusing for people because past tense of "to lie" is "lay" and the past participles are weird.

I lie on my bed and eat donuts
I lay on my bed and ate donuts
I have lain on my bed and eaten donuts

But "lie in" is used as a noun.
I have a lie in
I had a lie in
I have a book
I had a book

Then there's the other "to lie"
I lie about the Westminster parties.
I lied about the Westminster parties.
I have lied about the Westminster parties.

And "to lay" which has to have something be part of the action.
The hens lay eggs.
The hens laid eggs.
The hens have laid eggs.

May be.

TheTerfTavern · 25/06/2022 10:34

You’re all wrong, it’s a long lie 😂

SnapDog · 25/06/2022 10:34

I think “lay in” is more of a Northern term. My MIL and her family use it anyway.

Faircastle · 25/06/2022 10:35

"Lay in" is a newish colloquialism meaning morning sex on a non-work day.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 25/06/2022 10:38

Plenty of people myself included, are fully aware that the correct term is lie. However most locals where I am use lay so I tend to as well. In the grand scheme of things does it really matter. Language evolves and changes over time. I presume you don't speak the English of Chaucer?

Bluesheep8 · 25/06/2022 10:40

Same as 'needs fixed' ....no, it needs fixing!

No, it needs to be fixed

Plutoisaplanet · 25/06/2022 10:42

EmoIsntDead · 25/06/2022 10:27

Nah, it’s a ‘long lie’ 😆

Yes this!

Not in Scotland! That's a very common and correct grammatical form in Scots English.

I think making a blatant thread to act superior about someone else's thread title is worse than using an incorrect word.

What a horrible thing to do

I agree with you, it is horrible but that's the level that some posters are. The thread will probably morph into a SPaG fest, and then it will likely be deleted.

There are some very odd posters about. Nothing we can do about that but report.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/06/2022 10:46

IcedOatLatte · 25/06/2022 10:28

Clearly it does to all the posters who are agreeing.

You not being bothered doesn't equal proper use language not mattering

It matters to MNHQ that posters use the site to correct other posters' SPaG and it definitely matters when a TAAT is posted, which is what this one is.

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 25/06/2022 10:48

I don't care what you call it just give me one.

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 10:49

Ah well I hadn’t considered that this was a direct TAAT and that is a bit off tbh. No need to be haughty about it!

However I stand by my assertion that using language properly does matter. Maybe on basic levels of communication it isn’t vitally important but on the whole language should be protected and dumbing down/losing accuracy isn’t a good thing.

EVHead · 25/06/2022 10:51

It depends on your dialect. I don’t see how you can get annoyed by the fact that people have different dialects.

As for “needs fixed” vs “needs fixing”, the former is standard in Scottish English.

YABU.

Yes, language usage is important. This is a chatboard though and posters don't deserve to have their SPaG corrected and their content critiqued for that. It really shouldn't need saying either.

I smile to myself through when I see the error-riddled posts from posters criticising others.

CutesyUserName · 25/06/2022 10:56

Yes, should be 'lie in'.

'Sat' has also crept in and become acceptable (to some). I was 'sat' on my bed, he was 'sat' looking at the TV. No, it is 'sitting'!

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/06/2022 10:59

I want to ask people who say this to ‘lie the table please’

EmoIsntDead · 25/06/2022 10:27

Beat me to it!

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 11:03

I hope you’re not referring to my comments when you say riddled with errors! However English is my third language so it’s not as if I’m an expert on it by any means...There does seem to be a universal rule that if one goes on about SPaG too much one must be taken down a peg or two by the universe to balance things out, which I think is fair enough tbh! Grin

Dialect/regional language is a different matter. But certainly where I’ve heard people say it, it’s not been a case of either of those.

Someone did say something very interesting on a thread a while back - SM means that many, many people who in the past wouldn’t have used written communication now do, and consequently little errors like ‘should of’ or, indeed, ‘lay in’ have become much more apparent than they would have been in the past. So perhaps language isn’t dumbing down at all. I’d never thought of that.

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 11:07

Also reading the OP again I think people are being harsh - OP wasn’t actually being horrid and as far as I can tell was just asking for clarification on whether or not it’s correct. It’s not like she was laughing at anyone or otherwise making a big deal of it.

Anyway I’ve talked a lot more about this today than anybody reasonably should! It’s a beautiful day here; here’s to a great weekend! 🌻🌻🌻

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/06/2022 11:15

NiqueNique, I wasn't' referring to you and, if I were, you'd never know because I wouldn't make a point of drawing your attention to it.

I will disagree with your assertion that the OP was just asking for clarification. No, they were not. This is a regular froth topic. Unless you'd seen them before you wouldn't realise but it would be unlikely as they don't last long (thankfully!).

I'm glad it's a beautiful day where you are, it's raining cats-and-dogs here!

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 11:20

Oh no! We had thunder and lightning storms yesterday. I know there’s some frothing on this and regular bunfights but to me the OP sounded genuine. However I agree there’s plenty of faux naïveté when it comes to contentious subjects so who knows!

QuestionableMouse · 25/06/2022 11:21

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 10:24

It does matter. Language should be used properly.

I am a published author with a MA in English (with distinction) and no, it really doesn't matter. If there was confusion over what it meant, then maybe but people know and understand what it means.

Life is too damn short to nit pick at things like this!

Hallyup89 · 25/06/2022 11:28

Who cares?

FreyaStorm · 25/06/2022 11:36

The one that gets on my wick is “jag” instead of “jab”

i.e. I had my Covid jag

It set my teeth on edge.

NiqueNique · 25/06/2022 11:37

That’s a Scottish thing though - that’s what they call it.
