I'm seeing this everywhere but should it not be Queens' ?

OP posts:
Foxglovesandprimroses · 30/05/2022 19:06

Why? There's only one queen.

OvOvO · 30/05/2022 19:17

Queen's means Queen is?
or I'm crap at this stuff

OP posts:
Eightieschildren · 30/05/2022 19:19

It’s Queen’s jubilee as in the jubilee of the queen.

YnysMonCrone · 30/05/2022 19:19

It's the possessive. The Platinum Jubilee of the Queen.

peridito · 30/05/2022 19:19

I guess it should be The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Well quite.

MindYourHeadDoggy · 30/05/2022 19:29

Hey OP.

‘s can be used both as short for “John is” like in “John’s going to the shop” or as a possessive- “John’s shopping bags were in the car”.

In this case, there’s one Queen and she has a platinum so it’s possessive, and so “the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee” is correct.

OvOvO · 30/05/2022 19:41

Thank you.
Even to the snarky snobby cunts! 💙

This is Pedant's Corner - what on earth did you expect?

OvOvO · 30/05/2022 19:45

Erm a civil answer?

Muphry rides again. Grin

@OvOvO two of the posters who have been snarky to you have made a SpaG mistake. And one of them has made two. Which, in a total of 12 words, takes some doing in fairness.

OvOvO · 30/05/2022 20:54

It's a very VERY long time since I got top grade at '0' level English and '0' level English Literature - I'm now just a pleb - and I apologise for interrupting your superior chatter on this board Grin

Are there any teachers there? Are children being taught about apostrophes? Are they being told that apostrophes can be used in more than one way? I ask because I am old and truly don't know what's on the curriculum.

OP, if there were 5 queens and they all had a platinum jubilee they would be Queens' Platinum Jubilees.

SmellyWellyWoo · 30/05/2022 21:08

It's so funny that someone would be so egotistical as to post an incorrect post in pedants' corner then complain that they are being attacked for having poor English! 🤣

SmellyWellyWoo · 30/05/2022 21:10

Also you have used a numerical 0 and not a letter O for what I presume is short for "Ordinary".

Disclaimer- this post may contain errors, I am not a pedant! 😃

Apostrophes for contractions are introduced in the KS1 curriculum, and for possession in KS2.

She asked a question about language.
That's what PC used to be used for up to a few years ago.

The OP didn't ask a question as such.

The post was worded in a way that indicated that everyone writing the 'Queen's jubilee' was in the wrong and the OP knew better.

It did come across as rather arrogant.

Posters asking questions on here are always met with helpful answers in my experience.

However, if someone is going to start a thread in Pedants' corner criticising other people's written English it's probably best that they know what they're talking about if they don't want to be met with derision.
