Sex 'assigned' at birth

Surely it's 'observed' and 'recorded'?

The problem with what you’re saying is that there is always an exception, because while it is pretty much always clear which way to go with intersex, it’s not 100%, which is why doctors make a choice – so it is assigned.

I just don’t understand why people are so upset with the idea that their sex isn’t formed 1 second after a sperm hits an egg. These things take time, it’s just science.

No, it;s not "science", you seem to just be making this up as you go along.

The differentiation is normally triggered by the presence (or absence) of an SRY, the desx-determining region on the Y chromosome. Id somoene has a DSD then they may not have the typical karyotype for their sex (XX or XY) but in nearly every case they still develop down one pathway.

Doctors are not making a choice based on external genitals, they woil use genetic testing to understand what condition a child has, and work from there.

As is always the case here, of course, this "assigned" conversation, as brought up by TRAs, is referring to people without DSDs. The claim is that a completely normal XY male was "assigned" male at birth.

Pretending that it's about DSDs is a diversion. Inveting "science" to back up the erroneous claims about DSDs is just a bit strange.

Of course your sex is determined from the moment that sperm and egg combine. The fact that it takes time to develop sexually differentiated characteristics is not a surprise to anyone. It is the frankly bizarre and incorrect idea that prior to sex organs beginning to differentiate, that foetuses don't have a sex! Or that they are all female. Unclear which incorrect claim you are making.

BobLep0nge · 26/05/2022 10:47

When an egg and sperm meet, no sex is decided at that point – it comes later in development

What do you think the point of sperm and eggs being X or X / Y is then?

DinosaurTime · 26/05/2022 10:48

Franca123 · 26/05/2022 10:43

@DinosaurTime You are aware you can test a blastocyst to see what sex it is? Where on earth are you getting your info from? I'm going to assume you're ill informed as opposed to pushing an agenda.

Just from what doctors have told me, my endocrinologist, just life learning? I didn’t know a blastocyst could do that, can you link to a reference where I can read about it?

Well it’s a guide, it’s not a rule – there are women with XY chromosomes, so it doesn’t really matter what the sperm and egg are? Otherwise if you just went by chromosomes there are a lot of women with wombs and vulvas that would be pretty upset if you called them a man!

But... how? It just hits the wall and then – boom – sex is decided? That makes no biological sense?

Doesn't really matter?

This just gets worse, so I'm out.

Franca123 · 26/05/2022 10:53

There are not women with XY chromosomes. By definition........

I don’t understand why people are so triggered by this? If you found out that your chromosomes didn’t match your sex, but you could prove that the sperm and egg did, or that they did match but the sperm and egg didn’t, how does that affect your life or anybody else’s?

Franca123 · 26/05/2022 10:54

Because a 5 day old embryo does not have a tiny little willy does not mean it's sex is not determined yet. It just means we can't see it without testing.

Franca123 · 26/05/2022 10:53

I personally know one person that does, and there are a thousands of women who do in the UK. It is very dangerous of you to suggest this isn’t the case and is really worrying.

But what can you test if chromosomes aren’t 100% accurate as to what develops? You could test, see XX, and then a boy is born – so what’s the sex then?

JanetPluchinsky · 26/05/2022 10:56

Now it’s been a while since I did GCSE biology but I’m pretty sure the egg is an X and the sperm is either an X or Y, so yeah, boom it hits the wall.

🤡🤡

Franca123 · 26/05/2022 10:56

I'm not triggered. I'm disagreeing. Don't be goady. I'm out too. Bye!

What the blinking heck are you on about?! Do you understand how the DNA from a sperm and egg combine to create a single cell (zygote), which then splits and splits repeatedly to become a blastocyst?

DinosaurTime · 26/05/2022 10:57

Yeah it’s been a while since my A-levels too, but that doesn’t add up – if the chromosomes aren’t 100% accurate to the sex, then that isn’t when it’s decided?

SolasAnla · 26/05/2022 10:57

DinosaurTime · 26/05/2022 10:42

There’s no such thing as a male embryo – there’s just embryos, it’s not that complicated. The sexual characteristics of an embryo are formed when it is subjected to hormones, which develop later in the pregnancy. Just ask any endocrinologist or biologist, it‘s pretty amazing!

Did you know that if you make a funny face and the wind hits it wrong that your face will stay that way for ever?🤪

Or that IVF has used genetic and sexing to screen for years.

BobLep0nge · 26/05/2022 10:58

But... how? It just hits the wall and then – boom – sex is decided? That makes no biological sense?

How on earth do you think we can sex select embryos before they're implanted and receive this 'hormone rinse'?

Right, so what’s your point? That you can sex a baby from the blastocyst?

Yeah and they get it wrong sometimes – you are warned about this when you sign up for IVF – it happens a lot!

Fairislefandango · 26/05/2022 10:59

Oh for goodness' sake. Posters aren't being 'triggered' by this. They are just pointing out that you are wrong. Sex is determined at conception, according to whether the sperm contains an x chromosome or a y chromosome. The fact that genitalia aren't there until later makes zero difference to that.

Of course you don't know a woman who has XY chromosomes. That person might 'identify' as a woman, you might believe that means the person is a woman. But that is a belief, not a fact.

DinosaurTime · 26/05/2022 11:00

Clymene · 26/05/2022 10:59

Yes, but like everything else it’s a guess, it’s not 100% accurate – you are warned about this when starting IVF.

Well they have a womb, and a uterus, and a vulva, and they had breast cancer which is why they found out they had XY – because most people don’t go around checking their chromosomes?
