There, I said it.

In what context? It's fine in boxing, but do you mean used instead of injection / vaccination?

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 14:46

@iklboo yes, instead of 'jag' mostly.

I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it does!

The most hideous phrase to come out of the pandemic was ‘jabs in arms’.

SwedishEdith · 23/04/2022 14:49

Oh, I hate 'jag' much more.

Are you Scottish? We say jag. Even the Scottish news used jag. But uk news and politicians all say jab.

iklboo · 23/04/2022 14:49

Jag is much worse! Isn't it Scottish dialect, though?

Onceuponatimethen · 23/04/2022 14:50

Loathe jag.

watcherintherye · 23/04/2022 14:50

I can cope with ‘jag’ because it’s traditionally Scottish, and I got used to my aunties saying it.

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 14:51

@watcherintherye never heard that one!

@museumum I am.

I hate ‘jag’, sounds so American, and we’ve enough of that creeping in !

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 14:52

Okay, seems I'm just ignorant then. Apologies! Grin

eggandonion · 23/04/2022 14:53

Jag is much better, scrab is better than scratch. NI and Scottish words rock.

well you can hate it all you like but its actually scottish

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 14:55

Do others not use 'jaggy' then?

No, never. tbh, I's always assumed that people saying "jag" were mis-saying "jab". 😃

eggandonion · 23/04/2022 15:00

I just thought all the jabs in arms people were people who couldn't say jags.😀

iklboo · 23/04/2022 15:00

No, you're not ignorant! Just different to others. Smile

MrsBrodie · 23/04/2022 15:01

Jag has been in use in Scots for centuries. No creeping Americanisms here!

JassyRadlett · 23/04/2022 15:01

As an Australian in the UK, I loathe both. Makes me feel like I'm being spoken to as if I'm about 5. Sort of like 'tummy' for stomach/abdomen, or other infantilising words.

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 15:01

Well, I shall now let the rage wash over me when I read 'jab' on here or hear it on TV.

I will continue to seethe quietly when I hear my friends/colleagues/fellow Scots say it.

Quickest therapy session ever.

Stop being so rational op, can't you continue with your frothing ways? This is MN after all!

Like jaggy nettles?
I'm also scottish but will use jabs or jags

Fairislefandango · 23/04/2022 16:05

Well YANBU to find it an annoying word - we all have things which irrationally irritate us.

But YABVU if you're under the mistaken impression that 'jag' is the 'correct' informal term for an injection and that the people saying 'jab' are getting it wrong. 'Jag' is Scottish, 'jab' is English, simple as that. Besides, it's 'jab' because you can 'jab' someone with a pointed object. Would a Scottish person say 'he jagged me with his finger '?

dementedpixie · 23/04/2022 16:06

You could be jagged by the finger nail on that finger they are jabbing you with

dementedpixie · 23/04/2022 16:09

I would relate a jab to a blunt object (like a punch or a poke) and a jag to a pointed, sharp object (thorns, needles)
