There, I said it.

I can’t stand jag

SenecaFallsRedux · 23/04/2022 16:16

I hate ‘jag’, sounds so American, and we’ve enough of that creeping in !

Jag is definitley not American. In the US it's "shot."

eggandonion · 23/04/2022 16:20

Jag must derive from jagged,as in jagged edge?

Nelliephant1 · 23/04/2022 16:21

Me too, it's a jag, always has been, always will be!!

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 16:23

Fairislefandango · 23/04/2022 16:05

Well YANBU to find it an annoying word - we all have things which irrationally irritate us.

But YABVU if you're under the mistaken impression that 'jag' is the 'correct' informal term for an injection and that the people saying 'jab' are getting it wrong. 'Jag' is Scottish, 'jab' is English, simple as that. Besides, it's 'jab' because you can 'jab' someone with a pointed object. Would a Scottish person say 'he jagged me with his finger '?

I'd say he poked me.

Do others not use 'jaggy' then?

There's no such thing as a jaggy snake?! 🤣

museumum · 23/04/2022 16:54

You can’t “jag” someone with your finger, you jag with a thorn, or a pin, a syringe or a sewing needle. It definitely needs to be something very sharp and pointy that can draw blood.
I’d say “poke” with a finger
”jab” would by with an elbow or punch

bringincrazyback · 23/04/2022 16:56

SwedishEdith · 23/04/2022 14:49

Oh, I hate 'jag' much more.

Came on to say the same! 😄

PurrBox · 23/04/2022 17:00

godmum56 · 23/04/2022 14:54

well you can hate it all you like but its actually scottish

'American' is the insult of choice around here, having nothing to do with whether something is remotely American or not (kind of like 'gay' was among school kids a generation ago).
I am American. We say 'shot' or 'vaccine'- never heard anyone say 'jag'.

Fairislefandango · 23/04/2022 18:08

I'd say he poked me.

That is avoiding the issue. Are you saying that in Scottish English the word 'jab' does not exist in the sense of poking a pointed object at someone? Does theword 'jag' have that meaning?

I'd hardly call it an issue...

I'm not saying it doesn't exist as a word. It's just not one I ever hear used in that context up here. And I already explained that I really meant it in the context of vaccinations.

OP posts:
Shinyandnew1 · 23/04/2022 18:24

I hadn’t heard jag until the covid vaccinations started up and I saw people writing it on here. I assumed they’d just misheard jab!

Jab is massively used and there is nothing wrong with it.

MarshaBradyo · 23/04/2022 18:25

Jag is worse

Jab is still bad

’jabs in arms’ was up there with some of worst phrases from pandemic

What did this actually mean? I've never heard it.

Hugasauras · 23/04/2022 18:30

I am Scottish and use either interchangeably.

Now, if this was about the word 'stookie' I would fight to the death to defend it! Love that word.

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 18:30

Never mind, I have googled that.

Yes, a pointless phrase. They weren't giving the vaccinations in any other body part, so what was the need?

idontknowdoi · 23/04/2022 14:46

@iklboo yes, instead of 'jag' mostly.

I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it does!

But jag is completely wrong

It's jab!

It's not wrong. It's just different. It's a Scots word.

I said it ‘sounds’ American

This is the most MN post ever. 😀

FancyFelix · 23/04/2022 18:51

Jab and jag both absolutely horrible. I'm totally with the OP.

Hearing Boris say triple jabbed makes me feel sick 🤢

butterpuffed · 23/04/2022 19:21

Jag is short for Jaguar. Car not animal 🤐

eggandonion · 23/04/2022 19:34

I have never heard jaguar being shortened to jag. The word jagged was used in 1513,according to an online dictionary, so being jagged with a sharp object is fine by me.

Zazdar · 23/04/2022 19:38

I thought Americans prefer “shot”. Jag is Scottish.
