Not tumble drier. This is going to crop up so many times now everyone seems to be looking at ways to reduce their energy bill. Please stop. I know I am preaching to the converted on here, but it's really annoying me.

OP posts:

A pp mentioned using ‘draw’ for ‘drawer’. I see it on MN all the time.

daisypond · 13/03/2022 06:36

@Oldh

No. Stop it. A tumble dryer makes clothes drier. Nouns and adjectives.
I understand the point you are trying to make, but you’re wrong here. Tumble drier is as correct as tumble dryer - tumble dryer OR tumble drier:
It's 'tumble dryer'

Bridal path makes my teeth itch. I imagine hedgerows strewn with ribbons and confetti which my horse would find very odd on a bridleway.

GerundTheBehemoth · 13/03/2022 07:07

Elusive and illusive. Often the latter is used when the former is meant.

Ambushedbycakeinmydreams · 13/03/2022 07:13

I could of got it cheaper. I could of come home earlier.

It's all a bit of, I think Grin

AnnieJ1985 · 13/03/2022 07:29

I am nodding to all of this, although I mix up effect/affect a lot, so I avoid using either of them.

I have tried to remember which is which, but it won't stick, does anyone have an easy "rule"?

loislovesstewie · 13/03/2022 07:38

Could 'of' instead of could have makes me want to scream.
and saying' I did it off my own back' it's bat you nincompoop.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 13/03/2022 07:52

None being used when non is meant. Utter drivel. You do not have a 'none stick frying pan'. Hmm

RewildingAmbridge · 13/03/2022 07:54

@ AnnieJ1985 the Effect is the End result (both E). Affect is the verb.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/03/2022 08:03

I saw “onsweet” (for “en suite”) recently, but since the author was only 10, I corrected her and she’ll know for the rest of her life.

An old friend mixes up”now” and “know” inconsistently.

The problem is, affect is also a noun, and effect is also a verb. Both less frequently encountered, but I don't think there's a simple rule. I just "know" which one is correct, but I don't know how. Confused
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/03/2022 08:09

@polkadotpjs

Is anyone else going to be calling their dryer Brian now? Just me?
Almost certainly, which will be very weird as my brother, FIL and next door neighbour are all called Brian. So thanks for that. Grin

I passed a parked van on the street the other day, a building company or something, with fancy writing on the back and sides advertising “no job to small” and I nearly had to go and knock on the door to tell them. Sad

Leftbutcameback · 13/03/2022 08:33

Hang on, what does wallah mean? As in a previous post. I can't work out what that should be!

PinaColada123456 · 13/03/2022 08:37

It's actually clothes dryer. The 'tumble' bit is redundant as they all tumble anyway. It's a dryer/clothes dryer everywhere else but the UK. Reading 'tumble' dryer makes my teeth itch.

loislovesstewie · 13/03/2022 08:44

As an aside, I once worked with a person, who shall remain anonymous, who wrote exactly as they talked. If that wasn't bad enough, the letters and notes were items that might have been seen in court. Apart from looking illiterate the meaning was not clear due to the poor writing skills. What I couldn't understand was the total inability to understand that auto correct was giving advice, which they ignored.

I think they're trying to say "voila"! 😂🙈

Thank you! That is exactly the kind of simple reminder I need.

Oh balls.

I hadn't got this far 😂

Skelligsfeathers · 13/03/2022 09:09

I hate ' use to' instead of 'used to'.
I have even seen it in books which have presumably been edited.

EmmaH2022 · 13/03/2022 09:14

@Hyenaormeercat

'You taught me' not ' you learned me'

I had a school friend who said that, It drove me nuts even as a child. I'm mid 50s, its presumably embedded in her family language.

As per another post, I think this is a genuine regional variation.
MyBottleOfRibena · 13/03/2022 09:15

@goingback

had someone in work ask "can you learn me how to do x report"
Someone at work asked me “Where’s these things that need did” 😩
piperatthegates · 13/03/2022 09:25

No one has mentioned my own worst irritant yet. His instead of he's as in "his passed his exam" Should be he's or he has. See it so often and it drives me mad.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/03/2022 09:28

Close minded.
Rest bite.

I'm also pretty annoyed with my iPhone which thinks that if I type ill I must mean "I'll", or if I type "were" I must mean "we're". Ridiculous.
