It's 'tumble dryer'

Not tumble drier. This is going to crop up so many times now everyone seems to be looking at ways to reduce their energy bill. Please stop. I know I am preaching to the converted on here, but it's really annoying me.

Yes! Also does no one say ageing anymore? I always see aging, even on bbc etc!

Oldh · 12/03/2022 19:22

I used ageing recently, and my phone auto corrected it to aging. We are using so many American words now, although in England, either version is correct Smile

I don't know what's wrong with me. People are saying how expensive everything is, what a struggle etc and all I want to do is type 'its Dryer'.

This thread is a repeat of another just of a few days ago. Not complaining as they are always fun....

Brought and bought are two entirely different words.

You lend something to someone and borrow from somewhere or someone else. Don't ask someone to borrow you something 🙄

.....

It's disgusting not discusting ....

Them/those

You was/were

Yes DH you drive me mad but I married you and love you knowing this 😂

tearinghairout · 12/03/2022 20:23

Also hairdryer.

Reallybadidea · 12/03/2022 20:25

There's an epidemic of 'abit', 'infact', and 'incase'. I know 'alot' has been a common mistake for a long (or along) time, but I'm not sure where these new ones have come from!

Hyenaormeercat · 12/03/2022 20:26

'You taught me' not ' you learned me'

I had a school friend who said that, It drove me nuts even as a child. I'm mid 50s, its presumably embedded in her family language.

“It’s dryer”

Sorry. I’m a pedant about apostrophes.

Oldh · 12/03/2022 20:52

Haha. I pressed it's - I blame my phone. Haven't seen the hairdryer/hairdrier conundrum.

According to my Alexa reminder, mine's a 'Brian' - whom I regularly have to remember to tumble. Wahay.

Thoosa · 12/03/2022 21:04

It falls under a sub-set of pedantry, that applies when it’s so completely inappropriate to say anything. See also rest bite.

I tell myself it’s fine to come up in hives as long as I stay silent.

"Brought" and "bought" is doing my head in at the moment. No, the police do not buy anyone home!

@Alliswells, who ate your question mark? Grin

'Rest bite' drives me crazy, I have to say. I'm very good at sitting on my hands and saying nothing, however. 😇

What about lose and loose?
Mamette · 12/03/2022 21:49

Passed and past. I see this everywhere.

I have long hair passed my shoulders.

We past a shop on the way.

😱

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 12/03/2022 21:54

'Loose' and 'lose' are so ubiquitous that I've almost stopped noticing. Occasionally I get a giggle from being able to read it in a "Loose the dogs of war!" style.

CheshireCats · 12/03/2022 21:58

Still growling silently at all the misused their/there/they're on here.
But apparently you are a snob if you comment on it.

Zampa · 12/03/2022 21:59

I have a friend who always types on route instead of en route. Makes my skin crawl.

Oldh · 12/03/2022 22:04

I don't correct anyone on a thread, but I find it hard to concentrate on the context rather than the mistake. I am loosing perspective Grin Grin.

Baystard · 12/03/2022 22:13

OP I have the same problem at work. I find it difficult to concentrate in work meetings at the best of times. When someone announces that they think we should "change tact" it completely derails me.

Oh god, in a similar vein, I give you 'per say'! Shock
goingback · 12/03/2022 22:22

had someone in work ask "can you learn me how to do x report"
