I’m trying to stop myself typing on another thread and getting absolutely torn to pieces for pedantry (and probably rudeness) but why on earth do people use ‘everyday’ instead of ‘every day’ meaning daily?

It has increased in use massively on here from what I can see.

Fully aware of the correct usage of ‘everyday’, of course. Just venting!

I would say it's one word when used as an adjective. "I do this every day" (separate words) vs "This is an everyday occurrence" (adjective).

I agree with you, OP. I wouldn't point it out on a thread but it annoys me so much.

I agree and there are various others creeping in. I can't think right now but will come nack when i remember, they have really irritated me.

But it also has a slightly different meaning. The temporal sense is conveyed by the word "daily". The sense of "commonplace" or "unremarkable" might once have been met by "mundane" - but that has quite a negative connotation. So "everyday" as an adjective is quite useful, I reckon.

I've not seen that usage - but it is horrible. Certainly a hanging offence.

People confusing adverbs of time and adjectives are presumably doing it because they don't know they are wrong.
I correct my kids at school who do it.
I don't use MN to humiliate people.
