ah yes Buda, in Ireland it's haitch whether you're posh or common...

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 07/12/2007 17:50

It's obviously Aitch, hence the 'an' before a word beginning with an'H'.
Dare not ask DD what she says for it now.
She is annoying me enough with 'we was..........'
IT'S 'WE WERE'!!!!

I hate the corruption of the English language.

Loads of people used to spell despatch with an 'i' and now you can legitimately but it's still wrong in my book

Twiglett · 07/12/2007 18:52

Nadine has just reminded me that it might be time to put on my Christmas festive name

Beetroot · 07/12/2007 19:02

Iota · 07/12/2007 19:05

I say aitch, but have noticed that my 6 yr old says haitch. I actually thought that it probably helps him remember the letter in question and didn't want to confuse him, so I didn't correct him.

Plenty of time for that when he is a little more literate, I feel.

Beetroot · 07/12/2007 19:05

Iota - stamp it out now otherwise they wil make a habit of it

Iota · 07/12/2007 19:07

I hear what you're saying Beetroot, but I'm not real comfortable with it

Curmudgeonlett · 07/12/2007 19:08

Iota .. DS also 6 and gets stomped upon from a great height for HAITCH

never too early to learn manners or pedantry in my humble opinion

Wallace · 07/12/2007 19:09

My ds1 has started saying "Jie" for "Jay" A regional variation, but not allowed in my house

Habbibu · 07/12/2007 19:28

Whether this is still true or not I don't know, but we used to use haitch/aitch as an example of a shibboleth to our first year univ. English Language students. In NI the word for Catholics was haitch, in line with Irish English, whereas the Protestants said aitch. As one of my students pointed out, in practice it would be quite hard to use: "What are you going to do - put them up against the wall and say 'SPELL HAIR!'?"

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 07/12/2007 19:31

I just spelt out my road to a delivery driver and said 'bee...you...sea...haitch'
Someone please flog me.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/12/2007 19:42

my dh is irish and he says haitch. but the dds will say it over my dead body

quickdrawmcgraw · 07/12/2007 19:45

haitch, or(R)and zee(Z) all annoy me. It's Aitch, are and zed. Never heard of anyone saying jie but I'm pretty sure that would annoy me too.

quickdrawmcgraw · 07/12/2007 19:46

SchnitzelVonKrumm does your dh say or for r? I think that's an Irish thing too.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 07/12/2007 20:26

QDM - in Ireland we say "or" for 'r'.

Never thought it was unusual until I moved to London and worked for a company who had a company called RTZ as a client. Everyone took great delight in making me say the name. I now say 'r' unless I am at home.

And I used to think it showed a great lack of character to lose the accent you were brought up with. Sigh.

DH still can't get over the fact that my family struggle with pronouncing DS's name. Matthew becomes MaCHew.

Habbibu · 07/12/2007 20:31

Buda, that's sad - I think the "or" is really pretty. Am a bit of a sucker for Irish accents, mind.

chipmonkey · 07/12/2007 20:55

I'm Irish as well, and over here, apparently the only Irish people who say "aitch" are Protestant! Or so I was told by an English visitor!

Habbibu · 07/12/2007 21:01
chipmonkey · 07/12/2007 21:06

Sorry, Habbibu!

Habbibu · 07/12/2007 21:08

That's quite all right.
