Twiglett · 07/12/2007 14:51

Mine said "them ones" Shall we sell them?

tissy · 07/12/2007 14:53

my dd says J ....I can't even write the word out, it rhymes with DIE- apparently it's the West of Scotland pronunciation, and no matter how much I correct her, she won't say it the right way!

ohnoherewego · 07/12/2007 14:56

I realised I was fighting a losing battle when they sang "Haitch is for Harvest" at the school harvest festival. Still, I've decided to pick my battles and let it go with my DC's.

HollyBerrie · 07/12/2007 14:57

Oh bad memories...I had a furious row at junior school with a vile enemy about it being aitch not haitch and so she asked the teacher who confirmed it was haitch...

tissy · 07/12/2007 14:58

Dd also claims she "doesn't say may" after I tried to get her to say, "please may I get down from the table". Apparently she only says, "can"!

TenLordsaLapin · 07/12/2007 14:59

HollyBerrie, your teacher was an idiot

There was a huuuge thread about this in the summer. I just think "haitch" sounds horrid ('orrid?)

mummyvontummy · 07/12/2007 15:06

Get him out of the habit-I still say it now! All my other pronunciations are beautiful except haitch! Has anyone elses lo's come home singing "when santa got stuck up the chim-ni" Argh!!! xx

coldtits · 07/12/2007 15:10

My son insists his teacher says HAITCH

It's the only time I have flatly contradicted, to his face, something the teacher says! He insisted that it Haitch, and I told him "It is Not, it is Aitch, and if your teacher keeps telling you to say Haitch then come and tell me. Haitch is the wrong way to say it."

aWorminaManger · 07/12/2007 15:14

Blimmin heck. It's just a local variation not an error. I say aitch. My sons both say haitch. I don't care a bit.

coldtits · 07/12/2007 15:16

I know, I'm a knob about it.

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 07/12/2007 15:16

I say "haitch" - I am Irish.

The sound is huh in phonics - if it is "aitch" how is the sound 'huh' - answer me that!!!!

The aitch brigade should stay in 'otels and talk about 'an istoric development'.

Twiglett · 07/12/2007 15:18

DH is Irish .. he does not say Haitch .. no excuse

regional variation my big fat arse .. this IS pedants' corner you know, we're allowed

OP posts:
ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 07/12/2007 15:19

But explain the 'huh' please?

OhLittleTownOfBotlehem · 07/12/2007 15:25

You're just going to have to get rid . Haitch is unforgivable in my book. It just sounds wrong.

I don't know much about phonics (dd isn't old enough yet), but surely if you follow that sort of rule, then 's' should be pronounced 'sess' and 'r' should be pronounced 'rarr', yes? I could go on...

tissy · 07/12/2007 15:29

aWorminaManger....my mother, who always insisted that aitch was correct, would also insist ob saying, ^'otel"!

(I'm ashamed to say I've lapsed on that front, but still couldn't bring myself to say haitch)

ABudafulSightWereHappyTonight · 07/12/2007 15:32

So if 'haitch' is wrong where does the 'h' sound come from in Hotel, Husband, Hunker etc etc?????????????

tissy · 07/12/2007 15:33

would also insist on saying, "'otel"!
