Apparently the finger in the dyke story was totally invented by the American children's writer Mary Maple Dodge in 1865. No Dutch person had heard of the story before then, but it became so popular with American tourists who read it in her book Hans Brinker (one of my childhood faves too) that they ended up putting up a statue to the fictional little hero. So that's how legends start, boys and girls.
