This doesn't make any SENSE!

The original version is, "To each his own."

In other words, "To each [person shall be given] his own [property]."

I have no quarrel with replacing 'his' with 'their' as a neutral-sex alternative, but it should be "To each their own."

Otherwise, it means, "Each [person shall be given] to their own [property]." Which is rubbish!

I'd always understood the phrase to refer to beliefs or tastes, rather than physical property. So "each to their own" makes sense inasmuch as it's a shortened version of "each person is entitled to their own belief/taste".

I've not heard this saying with reference to property either, more to people's opinions and ways of doing things.

Was it originally with regard to property ?
