I agree with you. It is nails scraping on a blackboard territory.

I don't understand the thought process that vs arrives at "ect"? It's totally bizarre that it is written incorrectly in this way so commonly suddenly. I'd love to know how people who write this pronounce the unabbreviated version!

thisgardenlife · 01/01/2021 01:25

I agree. Where are the culprits to be found? I assume you see this often for it to have become the subject of a MN thread.
For the curious, ect stands for electro convulsive therapy; etc. on the other hand is etcetera, abbreviated. Grin

I love you

@PolkadotGiraffe I wonder if it is because the culprits pronounce it ecksetra? ect for short, clearly. Grin

I think some people hear it as 'ec cetera' so... ect

I have my Latin teacher to thank for knowing etc is et cetera and I have taught every class in my 25 years of teaching (not Latin or English!) that it is etc. I have been on a mission to stamp out ect for years!!

NB also learnt note bene (No one seems to use nb anymore though).

Perhaps! That has made me laugh on this very sombre day, so thank you! Grin

It used to be a signal that someone else had read Molesworth.

Now I suspect it's just not knowing that it is short for et cetera -- which would be the reason Molesworth got it wrong, too.

StanfordPines · 21/03/2021 18:41

I prefer &c.

FlyingBurrito · 21/03/2021 18:42

If you'd posted this in any other topic there'd no doubt be many posts by now telling you that everyone who types it is dyslexic.

I don't understand the MN reluctance to ever accept that they simply don't know the correct abbreviation, always bending over backwards to make excuses Smile

King & I hope it works 😂 really bugs me too OP
