Pedants' corner

It's a border not a boarder

I know this is flippant, but so many people on social media and mumsnet do not know the difference.

Why do so many people not know how to spell border?

There was an equally unpleasant thread about this last week.
If you post this on Pedants' Corner (which used to be a nice place for discussing nuances of language but has now become a dark little corner of MN where people guffaw about Chester Drawers and other mistakes people make) I'm sure you'll "find your people" as they seem to like saying.

Is there a reason why this is in the covid forum?

veryveryfine · 29/12/2020 09:22

I had noticed that also but didn't comment as did not want to be accused of being pedantic. I just swear under my breathe a lot!

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/12/2020 09:22

My favourite recently was a Daily Mail headline using ‘pore’ instead of ‘pour’. Embarrassing.

Why is this question on the Coronavirus bored? Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/12/2020 09:23

People can get carried away in the moment when typing fast and furiously, then not spelling things correctly (even if they do know the different spellings and meanings of words). I have been known to do it myself with 'its'/'it's' even though the incorrect use of the latter for the former is one of my bugbears.

delightfuldaisy19 · 29/12/2020 09:26

It's on a Covid forum as this where all of the 'close the boarders' comments are.

Just an observation and I wasn't trying to be patronising/pedantic. I'm just somewhat surprised that this misspelling is so widespread

I spotted that on a thread Grin

Even the BBC had a headline about vaccination "role out" the other day. Hmm Took them a few hours to correct it to rollout.

PlanDeRaccordement · 29/12/2020 09:36

I think it’s because of the very low qualifications to be a journalist. You can get an apprenticeship with a passing grade in GCSE English and start writing for media. This leads to some really uneducated types writing articles. It’s not just using the wrong words, but also misunderstanding and misreporting scientific studies.

Don't you just love him? Xmas Wink Did you mean "a Covid forum LIKE this" OP? Muphry 2, I think.

Those 'shut down our boarders!' posts make me envisage some sort of dreadful crisis at Mallory Towers is unfolding.

ILoveShula · 31/12/2020 15:23

It's because they no longer proofread but rely on spellcheckers.

Newsprint is teaming with errors these days. I'm hoping to calve out a niche for myself as I love pouring over the papers.

I have a book of Brexit cartoons, with a caption “oh no, hard boarders!”, and a picture of St. Trinian’s style schoolgirls.

Well, it makes me laugh 😆

I'm a beta reader for a novelist - unpaid apart from free copies of his books & a credit in them. Most fun ever!

You should take a look in 'Gardening' as it crops up quite a lot there too. Grin

Grin Bought the Torygraph last Saturday. I normally am not bothered by the colour supplement but it was missing and it had a Matt feature in it.
