Question marks everywhere!

Hello. I haven't posted in Pedants' Corner before so please excuse me if this has been covered already. But... there seems to be an explosion of the use of question marks in posts on the site. When they are used it's as if to turn a statement into a question or show confusion but it's driving me mad whenever I see this - it's just so wrong and jars each time I see it.

Is it an online-only form of use maybe, like perhaps text-speak?

I see things like 'I haven't tried that lipstick so I don't know if it will suit me?'. Or 'I didn't say that??????'.

I wish it was acceptable to ask on a thread, just out of interest, why the poster chose to use question marks in that way, but it would be rude so I'm asking for insight here!

I do that. I know not to put it in official or formal correspondence but i feel it gives effect to my puzzled facial expression in text so my words come to life more. I don't type on forums and texts like I would for academic purpose for example. I just cant be bothered typing up properly on my phone.

That makes sense Wagamammas. Thanks for replying. : )

I dislike when people use a question mark for something question-related, but not actually a question. E.g. “I asked her if she wanted to go?”.

I sometimes get e-mails that contain multiple exclamation marks!!

Example:

Good Morning Mike!! Hope yourself is well!!!

FlamedToACrisp · 30/07/2020 11:56

I would find that use of 'yourself' more annoying than the exclamation marks!
