Going there vs getting there

Can anyone explain to me if/why the question : how are you going there?
Is wrong.
Should it always be: how are you getting there?

To me they mean slightly different things.

"How are you getting there?" would want an answer about means of travel: on foot, by car, on a pogo stick.

"How are you going there?" would be about the route: via Norfolk, using the Leeds bypass, on the M42.

I think “how are you going there” would usually be interpreted as a slightly garbled “how are you?”

Palavah · 06/04/2020 17:31

"how are you going there?" as an enquiry about mode of transport isn't wrong, but it doesn't sound particularly fluent or standard use to me.

Might be more common in some regions?

"How are you going, there?" is how you'd need to punctuate it if you meant "how are you?"

OuterMongolia · 06/04/2020 17:32

I don't think I would ever say "how are you going there?".

CarlottaValdez · 06/04/2020 17:34

There isn’t a rule preventing it really but it’s not usual idiom. I’d assume a non-native speaker if I heard it I think.

lazylinguist · 06/04/2020 17:37

It's just an idiomatic usage, and one which a lot of non-native speakers probably wouldget right. 'How are you going there?' definitely sounds clunky, even though there's no logical reason why.

eddiemairswife · 06/04/2020 17:50

I would probably say, "How are going?" Meaning train, car, plane, etc?

Todayissunny · 08/04/2020 07:28

Thanks. I teach ESL to kids and the course book (which is awful and I don't think its written by native English speakers) introduces 'How are you going there?' Which I would never say. I think it is wrong but can't work out why.

How are you going there reads to me like a question about how you’re feeling. If you’re asking about a mode of transport then getting there makes more sense. I’d say why are you going and how are you getting there?
