Obeast... it's obese! My MIL says it and I just look at her in disgust. My husband also says yarned instead of yawned Angry

Iamthewombat · 20/12/2019 09:28

‘Sickth’ for ‘sixth’. Some people have started saying ‘sick’ instead of ‘six’ now. Where will it end??????

ladyvimes · 20/12/2019 09:34

Mischievous. My friend with an English degree pronounces it mischievious and it drives me mad!!

Iamthewombat · 20/12/2019 09:36

‘Illuminous’ for ‘luminous’.

Drizzzle · 20/12/2019 09:37

Ast instead of asked

foamrolling · 20/12/2019 09:38

Sangwich for sandwich is a popular one round here

Lunaballoon · 20/12/2019 09:38

Mischeevious for mischievous. Agree about sickth too. It’s weird how the ‘wrong’ pronunciation seems to become the norm!

Devereux1 · 20/12/2019 09:39

women, it's pronouned women, not man with delusional thoughts.

Guineapigbridge · 20/12/2019 09:40

All the mispronunciations drive me mad. That’s why I’m a pedant.

Guineapigbridge · 20/12/2019 09:41

When my 4 yo son mispronounces anything it’s adorable though.

Notstrongandstable · 20/12/2019 09:42

Pacific instead of specific ...ok for kids, it's a tricky word. If you're an adult, unacceptable!

Notstrongandstable · 20/12/2019 09:43

Not quite mispronunciation but should of instead of should have...rage!

Seeline · 20/12/2019 09:43

Axe instead of ask drives me crackers

neddle · 20/12/2019 09:47

My Dh asks me to ‘defend for myself’ when he means fend. ie I have to sort my own dinner.
I’ve explained it many times and he still does it, makes me inexplicably angry.

Oh and also pronounces our daughter’s name as if it has an i in it, when it’s an e.

CherryValance · 20/12/2019 09:49

I’ve been watching Kirstie Allsopp’s Christmas programme and have heard her say ‘expresso’, ‘mischeevious’ and ‘hallelooliah’!

MsJuniper · 20/12/2019 09:52

pronounciation

People spell it like that too but every time I hear it out loud it makes me wince!

Fanlights · 20/12/2019 09:57

Hear, hear!

‘Sickth’ for ‘sixth’. Some people have started saying ‘sick’ instead of ‘six’ now. Where will it end??????

I have asked English friends who speak RP why they say this, and they claim it is very, very difficult to pronounce 'sixth', and that 'sick-th' is actually correct. Conversely, I have never met an Irish person who says 'sickth'. I have yet to come across 'sick' for 'sixth', though...

'Sangwidge' and 'sammidge' both enrage me. Mind you, so does 'sarnie'. And people asking for 'one panini, please.'

Starryskye · 20/12/2019 09:57

I live in Yorkshire, 'bockle' instead of bottle, 'lickle' not little and my ultimate peeve 'keckle' in place of kettle. Up there with everyone saying 'reyt good' just baffles me and yet I was born here

YouJustDoYou · 20/12/2019 09:58

One of the School mums writes "atucally". I thought itbwas just auto correct at first but that's how she pronounces it too. It's ACTUALLY woman!

Footle · 20/12/2019 10:04

Westmorland, pronounced with the stress on the second syllable. Or spelt with an extra e.

Devereux1 · 20/12/2019 10:07

Most words I hear shouted across me on the Tube at about 4pm...

YourOpinionIsNoted · 20/12/2019 10:07

My husband says comatoast instead of comatose. Luckily we don't discuss being in a coma often, as hearing "comatoast" gives me such rage he might end up in one.
