Just overheard someone ordering an ‘expresso’ Hmm

What mispronounced words drive you mad?

I think Delia used to mispronounce it like this in one of here series. Along with ba-sal-mic vinegar

She did! And she didn’t roll up her sleeves so her cuffs were dangling in the food and there was no way she was washing her hands properly. But that’s a whole other thread...

OrinocoGlow · 20/12/2019 14:21

West-minister. Drives me mad!!

LaMarschallin · 20/12/2019 14:22

"Joolery" for "jewellery".
"Sekkertry" for "secretary".
And "trained medical professional" for anything. Just say you're a doctor (although, usually they just say they're a doctor), nurse, nurse prescriber, physiotherapist etc

FriedasCarLoad · 20/12/2019 14:24

Wrath - I increasingly hear it pronounced to rhyme with Cath, rather than with moth.

haverhill · 20/12/2019 14:25

Written not spoken, but I can’t believe how many people think it’s ect not etc.

Pemba · 20/12/2019 14:28

Idyllic pronounced as 'ideal - ic'. No! It begins with a short a as in 'lid'. It's nothing to do with the word ideal.

I would say the majority of people get this wrong. Including people paid to narrate documentaries (who usually make several other mistakes). Why don't the directors of the documentaries ever pick them up on this stuff?

SpoonBlender · 20/12/2019 14:32

Oops. Haverhill (and how is that pronounced correctly - "ayverill" haha!) mentioning ect ect again made me realise I'd said Molesworth was Willy Rushton when they're actually by Geoffrey Willans. Rushton voiced the audio version.

SpoonBlender · 20/12/2019 14:34

"Two ecks" for two times, written 2x. Just no.

beautifulstranger101 · 20/12/2019 14:34

"skellington" for skeleton.
"could care less"- Its COULDNT care less, the first one means you DO care
"pacifically" I mean....really?

mclover · 20/12/2019 14:37

When people put a 't' in chorizo and pronounce it 'chorit-zo' Confused

Permanantlypuzzled · 20/12/2019 14:38

It’s quarter not Corter I don’t care if you are a news reader.

Cooroo · 20/12/2019 14:40

On a happier note - weirdly I've never heard anyone mispronounce 'debris', which is odd. (Travelling down the M1 st the moment, which is why I thought of it)

AJTracey · 20/12/2019 14:41

Isshoo for issue
Ashooom for assume
BreGsit where the hell does the G come from?!?

RiddleyW · 20/12/2019 14:50

Expresso isn't a word meaning coffee anywhere (except by linguistic drift brought upon us by idiots)

Have you ever been to France?

puds11 · 20/12/2019 14:52

Oooh bregsit would drive me mad!!!

Morri-bobs... Angry

BrownSauceOfCourse · 20/12/2019 14:59

People who use 'generally' instead of 'genuinely' and it completely changes the intonation of the sentiment

Gah! My bloody children say this all the time - they REFUSE to accept that they are using entirely the wrong word! Drives me batty.

My mother insists on saying Thee-E-Ter for Theatre, and Toona for Tuna.

Not strictly mispronunciations but a constant source of irritation to me:
DP and his family who all say 'would of, should of' etc.
MIL in particular who uses 'was' instead of 'were', as in "We was at the shops, was you there too?".

Oh and DP who says 'them' instead of 'these or those', as in "them ones there".
My daughter who texted me "I can't be asked" the other day. I pointed out it was 'arsed' and she said "That explains why Miss keeps telling me to watch my language."

It's no fun at all being a pedant in my house.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 20/12/2019 15:04

@SpoonBlender I am so glad it isn't just me!

Like you, I checked the whole thread very carefully first as I thought it would have already been mentioned Grin

FriedasCarLoad · 20/12/2019 15:05

Ooh unless you're one of the people saying deBREE Wink. I hear that far more often than DEbry nowadays.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 20/12/2019 15:06

Tescos......unless you're planning to visit more than one store it's TESCO.......there isn't an S on the end!

pelirocco123 · 20/12/2019 15:06

My husband says belong instead of as long

One day I will shoot him

fedup21 · 20/12/2019 15:08

I think about 50% if people say dayBRIE and 50% DAY Brie!

ItsGoingTibiaK · 20/12/2019 15:10

"Two ecks" for two times, written 2x. Just no.

Oh yes. And also people who use ‘square metres’ and ‘metres square’ interchangeably. They mean quite different things.

FriedasCarLoad · 20/12/2019 15:11

Isshoo for issue
Ashooom for assume

I agree. I assume it's the same people who say choosday and tishoo.

BreGsit where the hell does the G come from?!?

This doesn't particularly bother me. They're simply pronouncing 'x' as 'gs' rather than 'ks'.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 20/12/2019 15:11

*metres squared
