Can someone knowledgeable give me a rule of when to use fruit as a plural and when to use fruits?

Thank you :-)

I understood that you use plural when referring to different types of fruit. I.e. a smoothie made from strawberry, banana and raspberry fruits.

The strawberry plant was doing well, it had lots of fruit

There are many different fruits in the greengrocers

What they said.

Same with fish/fishes.

Brilliant.

Makes perfect sense. Thank you everyone.

It does make perfect sense. Shame it isn't always the case! What about when they are in a container?

A packet of mixed dried fruit (containing sultanas, raisins and currants, not to mention candied peel, which is only part of a fruit)

A bowl/basket of fruit - even if it had a mixture of fruits, you wouldn't say a bowl/basket of fruits.
