Initialisms

I'm finding myself getting irritated when I see acronyms/ initialisms written with only the first letter in caps.

For example, I'm a GP and one team member always writes Gp instead of GP in emails. And in MN posts Op instead of OP.

I hate it, is it only me feeling like this? Please tell me someone else hates this too Grin.

Isn't it just a symptom of autocorrect, so even if you type OP it will change it to Op? That's bound to happen in informal settings such as MN posts and internal emails.

Hate is a strong emotion. I can appreciate it might be a minor distraction or irritation, but surely you can understand the meaning.

Actually, aren't acronyms usually written with lower case: Nasa, Unicef...

I should have said lighthearted really but I do find it irritating Grin.

Thinking about why it annoys me so much, I think it's related to the colleague who emails in this manner and it reminds me of this whenever I see it. She also misses out other capitals and punctuation, and writes '1' instead of one. Oh god her email style just pisses me off Blush.

Hmm, so the symptom you initially presented (being irked by a particular typo) is the result of an underlying condition (curmudgeonly disapproval of your colleague's writing style). Grin Is the colleague younger than you, by any chance?

DrFoxtrot · 10/08/2019 19:01

Only slightly younger Grin there are other reasons for the dislike, long story. I have realised that the reminder of her is likely to be the problem.

Well, I think we’ve had a bit of a breakthrough there. That’s probably enough therapy for today, DrF. Same time next week? Grin

Haha yes, thank you Halo

GP isn't an acromym. Nasa and Unicef are.

DrFoxtrot · 22/08/2019 19:54

It's the initialisms I have a problem with Grin.

It just looks sloppy to me writing Gp, etc.

I think we've worked out that I have a bigger problem with the colleague though and that's a very long, hideous story!
