"Step foot" and "watch on"

Both of these have annoyed me intensely in the last week. Where have they come from?

Andy Murray playing tennis and Judy Murray "watching on".

And someone else saying that they didn't "step foot" in a place.

AIBU to get annoyed by them? Are they accurate alternative expressions?

What’s “step foot” meant to be? Having a stupid moment. Grin

TheCrowFromBelow · 06/07/2019 14:50

Set foot?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/07/2019 14:53

Yes, set foot. So, for example, I am never setting foot in that establishment again! There seems an increasing tendency to use "step foot" instead.

Oh of course. I am dopey with snotty cold.
Step foot is just a mishearing surely? Kind of works though so it might take off Hmm

FamilyOfAliens · 06/07/2019 15:05

Step foot doesn’t make sense in any way, but I doubt that’ll stop it catching on.

BiscuitDrama · 06/07/2019 15:05

I don’t mind ‘watches on’. Is it not correct? It feels different to ‘watches’.

Just add 'step foot' to 'chomping at the bit', 'off his own back', 'on tender hooks', 'mute point', 'pacifically' etc etc etc (or ect Wink).

It's an insight into how quickly people copy each other unquestioningly.

Musicalstatues · 06/07/2019 22:37

I thought I was going mad as I’m seeing ‘step foot’ EVERYWHERE at the moment and was honestly beginning to wonder if I’d been wrong to say ‘set foot’ all this time!

BiscuitDrama · 06/07/2019 22:56

Since seeing ‘doggy dog world’ it’s become our new catchphrase. Grin

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/07/2019 07:58

"Doggy dog world" 😂

'Doggy dog world', wonderful. And it makes absolutely no sense.

Clearly some people don't actually listen to the words that are coming out of their mouths when they speak.
