I wondered this about the plural of roof

It depends on your SciFi literary cannon. Both can be right.

Agree with Turkey if we're talking sci-fi/fantasy, but it's 'canon' -- this is Pedants' Corner, after all.

In general, though, 'dwarves'. And I think 'roofs' is modern standard, and 'rooves' archaic.
