All those split vowel digraphs!

Like Irene-a or like cinema?

And which syllable is stressed?

How interesting. Everyone I’ve ever met says Mur-rain-a

TheThirdOfHerName · 11/09/2018 17:11

The way I pronounce it sounds similar to the way I say the word marina. Middle syllable stressed.

Andtheresaw · 11/09/2018 17:11

My reena

TheThirdOfHerName · 11/09/2018 17:14

Here's the

onceuponakitchensink · 11/09/2018 17:22

I say mih-ree-na.

onceuponakitchensink · 11/09/2018 17:23

Or Mih-rain-a possibly?

dontticklethetoad · 11/09/2018 17:24

Oh, we have always said my-rain-ah!

JellySlice · 11/09/2018 20:36

MurAINer sounds wierd.

I've heard GPs at our surgery say

MyREEENa (English and Scottish doctors/nurses)

and

MirENNa (Kuwaiti and French (or Belgian?) doctors/nurses)

So I suppose the first is 'correct', but the second sounds nicer...sort of more gentle.

(It's on my mind because mine is due replacement. And I'm not looking forward to it. Wondering how to pronounce the name of the thing is just procrastination tactic.)
