21st century issues for pedants

I was wondering whether there are any guidelines on punctuation after emoticons and webpages Confused. MN is ok but on other places (e.g. emails) putting a full stop directly after an emoticon or a webpage messes with the link. Leaving a space after the link though looks messy.

I am also wondering whether emoticons should be inside the sentence or after the sentence. My personal preference is inside the sentence, however some people put them after the full stop.

Any solutions for these 21st century dilemmas?

If we think of emoticons as an extra set of punctuation, then they act as a full stop like ! and ?.

Agree. Emoticons can, effectively, be punctuation.

Though you may disagree Hmm
I don't mind Wink
