So is it Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day?
I thought if the thing belonged to more than one person then is was the second.

'Women' is already plural.

WowOoo · 08/03/2018 18:32

I thought they were both grammatically correct, but the first one looks better and is more widely accepted. That's what I was taught at school, a long time ago!

It’s women’s because women is the plural of woman.
It’s mothers’ because mothers is the plural of mother.
Sorry, that probably isn’t very clear!

It’s Mothering Sunday in the U.K. technically speaking. The date is connected to Easter and moves.

It’s Mother’s Day in the US and is always the second Sunday in May.

I’m British living in the US - I make sure we celebrate both Grin

It’s perfectly clear. Thank you. I should have realised that women is a plural.

The thing is though in the US it isn’t Mothers’ it’s Mother’s.

It was started specifically by a women’s group for you to celebrate your Mum. So Mother’s.

Mothering Sunday is an old UK tradition about returning to visit your Mother Church. It just morphed into being about Mums because in going to your home church you also tended to visit your parents.

So it’s ‘mother’s day’ as in the day that belongs to my mother. So it might be Suzanne’s day, it belongs to just Suzanne and not all the Suzannes.
